Servicing a 1.2 Ibiza

Hi All, this is not an uber cool thread about the faster Ibizas unfortunately but one about servicing my little 1.2.

It's a 53 plate 1.2 Ibiza and she needs a service, firstly can some one tell me when the cam belt should be done (I'm 90% sure that it has been done already).

Now my main question really is part numbers. I had a quick look already but could only find information on the Diesels. Does anybody have part numbers for air, fuel and oil filters and plugs? What's the best place to get them? I'm hoping for ebay, I presume that Halfords will just be rip off merchants?

What oil? 10/40W Semi be ok?

Thankfully I can answer most of your questions as i've had my 1.2 for 2 years now heh

First of all the 1.2 doesn't have a cambelt, it has a timing chain and it is supposed to last the life time of the car, it is common that these can slip. Mine hasn't though and mines at 90k. As long as you use the right oil and look after the car this shouldn't be an issue

I got most of my service parts off ebay, by far the cheapest for filters etc. I would recommend a K&N panel filter for the airfilter myself, more expensive than a standard one but it will improve airflow and you'll never need to buy another one again.

10/40W semi isn't good enough mate, it'll work but I recommend 5w-30 fully synthetic, it'll be better for the car. Personally I'd nip down to your SEAT dealer and buy some Quantum Synta Longlife III 5w-30 fully synthetic oil, it'll only be around £25-30. VW/Audi/SEAT dealers use it all the time. Apparently if you use this specific oil it is supposed to be better for your timing chain and prevent it from slipping

Hey guys just about due my 40,000 service and was quoted £300 from a dealer (£210 with discount) my question is I can get it done for under £100 from a local garage but lose my component cover from the dealer I bought it from which has 6months left but as per doesn't cover a lot of stuff. What you think pay the stealer rates this time and next time service myself or local garage?

Good advice from Stezo there, I completely agree only I'd use genuine filters (maybe apart from the air filter) and spark plugs, because they are surprisingly cheap from the dealers.

As for you Higgi, I'd either give it to the dealer for this time only or service it yourself using genuine parts, keep a receipt of the parts for your records in case you ever need them.

I do mine myself and only pay about £50 - £60 for all the parts, and I get all the parts inc. oil from the dealers.
I do mine once a year regardless of millage.

Spark Plugs x 3
Oil Filter
Oil
Cabin pollen filter
No engine air filter as I too have fitted a K&N Panel filter.

From SERE Motors the prices for genuine service parts are:

(prices correct as of May 2010)

oil filter and sump bung - £6
pollen filter - £8.10
fuel filter - £8.85
spark plugs - £11 for 3

There's no service interval on the fuel filter, so you don't have to change it.

is it a easy job?
would be good if I could get some step by steps
When would people recommend to change them?

It's not too hard, just a case of removing the engine cover and unscrewing them

I would personally get them changed every 30k, some people go extreme and change them every year

Sort of near the right rear wheel, not the easiest to get off.
Best to follow the fuel lines from the tank.

going to get the brake fluid & gearbox oil change done at a local garage.
I'll do the rest of the service myself.
Just to confirm all i need is:

• Spark plugs - 3 of these

• Air filter
• Fuel filter - is this worth while doing?

Regarding the 1.2 service, all fairly straight forward.

Buy the gear from David at Sere Motors (possibly oil from elsewhere due to shipping). Just give him a call with your vin number and he'll sort you all you need. 3 spark plugs, oil filter, pollen filter, and air filter are all dead easy. The fuel filter I didn't do as the clamp holding it is fecked and I'm not sure I could get it off and another one fitted. Fitting the fuel filter right next to the back wheel where it gets sprayed with water and salt etc. was a real smart move. Also, get a new sump plug and washer.

I didn't think to take pictures when I did mine as it's such a straight forward job really.

I have never changed my fuel filter in my car since having it, is it worth doing? I am getting low MPG, you think this may be the reason?

Worth doing if you can. I'll get it done one day in summer when it's fine and the car doesn't desperately need to go anywhere for a day or so while I feck on with it.
