I was also going to replace the ******* noisy tappet that makes it sound **** from cold. I was going to do this seperately but do you need to take the cam belt off to do so? if so i may as well do it wen doin the service.

if you change the tappets your need to remove the cam i believe, if its just a little ticking an oil change may help. my friend used some oil designed for hydraulic tappets in his fiesta ztec and it helped quieten the hydraulic tappets a little.

as for the cambelt, i did mine on the gti and it says you need some special pliers to move the tensioner around, but basically there are 2 small holes in the side of it, and some right angled circlip pliers did the job. apart from that, some torx sockets for the bottom pulley bolts.

Note: When you fit new tappets leave the car off for a few hours.

Friend of mine changed his and went booting down the road on new tappets.........BANG! :D

Might as well do the cambelt change at the same time as you will have the camshaft out. Its not too hard a job on the 1.4, bit more tricky on the 2 16v :)

cheers for that advice! i wil try not to get too excited and take it easy for the first 1000 miles.... not that you can really have it in a 1.4 :)

just out of interest was the engine noticeably quieter before it blew up?????

Did mine a couple of years ago. Can't remember if I replaced the tensioner pulley as well or it did that on another car. Might be worth looking into.
