No idea on how to fix but the whole secondary air system can be removed. It's not really needed.
Robdon or others who have done it may be able to give further advice.

Can you hear the secondary air pump when you start the car up? on mine it comes on when first started and then turns off when the automatic choke turns off then cuts back in for about 5 secs then nothing. Maybe the pump isn't working which would put up the excess emitions light on as i'm pretty sure it pumps fresh clean air into the exhaust system when the choke is on so the emitions aren't so high on initial start up. People feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

i did that fix to mine as it sounded like it was getting louder and eventually people said it would sound like a tractor when it started. Yes it is fiddley but not impossible to do, when you try and remove the pump i think theres a bracket or something in the way which makes it hard to turn to get out and i think i had trouble getting one of the plastic hoses off but its done now so good luck, let us know what happens.

Mine is getting embarrassingly load from cold starts now! People are starting to gives me strange looks.

Has anybody had the pump replaced/fixed by a garage? How much did it cost? I dont really have the tools/space/time/know-how to do it myself.

You could get it replaced but over time the same thing would happen.
Not sure on how much a garage would charge to repair it. Just take it in for a quote.
Hell even print out the guide and give them the nuts and bolts.
Some young apprentice might do it for you for the price of a couple of pints.
