Secondary Air Pump

I've just been advised that my Cupra's secondary air pump needs to be replaced. They are not cheap, around £250!!

I've seached through the posts and it doesn't seem to be a common fault (at least not with the Ibizas). So have I just been unlucky or are there other things that should be checked/tried first?

Engine management light is on, new pump has been recommended by former SEAT dealer (now independent).

Cheers guys....

Get it on VAG COM, and see what errors its throwing up, unless they gave you the codes.

Could just be a sensor, could be anything, not worth wasting £250 quid, on something it may or may not be!

Fill in your profile fully, and post in the vagcom section, to see if anyone local to yourself can help you, if you haven't got vag com.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have VAG com but the fault was picked up last week during its 70k service.

They have got back to me this morning with this price and I'm still not recovered... Just hoping for a miracle cure!

Cheers

They could be bullshitting you mate, its not uncommon!

Are you getting anyissues, other than the engine light??

Would be best to contact someone local, and get them to double check it for you.

Thanks mate - it's been reset twice before (once by dealer and once by disconnecting battery) and the light comes back on after a few hundred miles or so.

You know what - I really don't know if there is a pump noise or not. I'll check later. But the car does have a deeper engine note and a slight whistle tone when its started.

There have been no ignition / starting problems - though I think that with this fault it might be more of a problem in cold weather?

Thanks again for your replies

Could be a vacuum hose. Mine was split and was throwing up the Engine Management Light, I changed all the vac hoses for £30.

Sod £250!!!! I'd bypass it!!!!

Yeah I know, its £250 plus VAT and an hours labour!!

I'll check the hoses and go from there. I'm not especially mechanical/technical, but will this be a big problem if it was left alone? I understand it is more to do with the CAT? It recently passed through MOT emissions no problems....

Cheers

its for warming up the cat, to reduce emissions on start up i think. it is pretty common, lots of people have minor errors associated with it in some way or another. me included

I think it pro longs the life of the cat though. So removing it may not be the cheapest thing to do in the long run.

Mines disconnected without any real issue. Vagcom is showing a stored fault but the car is running fine.

Haha, yeah you could have made a few quid - the RRP is actually £267 plus VAT.

Reading into the subject a bit more, I would be quite happy to leave it as is, but haven't got vag com so can't bypass the fault. Also I guess there would be resell problems (when the time eventually comes - 5 years so far and counting) and maybe an MOT issue on emissions (?)
