Secondary Air Pump

Im getting my car fixed on tuesday, apparently the secondary air pump is broke. Whats that actually do? They need the car for half a day, does that sound like some major work to just replace a part? Im just wondering if i could be damaging my car more by driving around in it before its fixed?

secondary?, i may be wrong (usually) but isnt this the turbo?

I think its something to do with the emisions. Eg when cold start to reduce emissions the secondary air pump is activated till the car heats up.

I think that's the turbine noise that you hear when starting from cold. You hear it stop after a couple of minutes of idling.

The AA guy did say the error message related to pumping fresh air into the exhaust fumes to warm up the catalyst quicker.

Im just a bit worried about my turbo, cant hear it very well i know im in limp mode, but even out of it, i still dont hear it that often. Whats it like on other cars? How loud is it and how much can u hear it?

how do you restart to get rid of limp mode? is it just turn off turn on?

What are the symptoms when that air pump goes? Emmissions light comes on?

Car drives fine and no damage will be caused

But will fail emmisions test for mot.

I was quoted £450 for a new secondary air pump and 2x lambda sensors (before they sorted my frickin' warranty out). I believe the sensors are approx £100 each, so youre probably looking at £250 for the air pump.

sorry to bring up an old thread but mine is making i think this humming noise constantly even when warm.....any ideas if this is a problem..?

The Secondary Air Injection Pump should only be working for the first few minutes on start up.

not once the engine is warm?

Could be a different noise?

had a little play, the buzzing type noise is there i think all the time but obviously only noticeable on tickover. However if i rock the steering it appears to lessen the buzzing, could it be the belt?.... obviously rocking the steering puts a load on the engine as the power steering pump is working...

Think its just me being paranoid ha ha
