Seat Leon Mk1 Temperature Sensor Problem

Hi everyone!
This is my 1st post.
I own a Seat Leon Mk1 (2003 Model). Recently, I noticed that the engine temperature indicator is very unstable.
It goes up to the 90oC and after a while goes to 0oC.
This up and down keeps going for a while and at the end it stops some times at 90oC and some times at 0oC.
I think that must be an engine temperature sensor failure but I have no idea where it is located on the engine.

Is there enything I can do???
A bit of advise???

Thanks in advance!!!!

Do a search for temp (or temperature) sensor and you should find all the info you need on how to replace it, what to replace it with and how to fit it :)

Might need to go back quite a few pages though, but the info is all out there :)

I 've got the thermostat replaced 2 years ago and the symptoms are completely different. The temperature never exceed 90oCelcious. The temperature indicator rises up and falls down between 0oCelcious and 90oCelcious. The yellow LED on the indicator don't lights.
Does enyone knows where is the engine temperature sensor located on the engine area?????
It would be a very helpfull information because I think that a dirty sensor terminal may causes this trouble.

i think the one you want is the coolant bottle sensor. i think that controls the gauge.

the engine temp sensor is located on the air filter side of the engine. its under the black trim cover, one of the smaller pieces. but as said i think its the one nesr the coolant bottle. try searching on here

So many guesses and non right! The "green top" (G61 I think) isn't the one you need, the one in the coolant bottle isn't either.

The one you want is, I understand, fitted to the thermostat housing - I had exactly the same as you until the temp gauge packed up completely. I can't tell you any more - the dealer did mine under warranty.

:D

Rich running and "Error in Mapped coolant sensor G61" is the Coolant Temp Sensor, AKA the Green Top.

Three beeps in a morning, but coolant level is fine is the coolant header tank (sensor probes can be cleaned)

Temp gauge fluctuation is the one in the thermostat housing.

Sooo many sensors :D

Well, my miniscule and insignificant experience says you got it wrong - it's not the G61 sensor.

OP will have to make his own mind up, but, of the two to change it's probably easiest to change to a Green Top (won't fix it though!)

when my blk top sensor failed the temp gauge behaved normally. it only affected running during the cold start. car drove fine once warmed up.

hence why i sugested coolant bottle. im going with feel if it isnt that.

let us know the out come

i had an early cupa last week with the same problem temp gauge fluctuating no codes in 01 but in 17 cooloand temp sensor was showing as faulty changed the sensor all o.k. just cant read the temp under certain conditions so if expansion bottle was faulty it would still have a temp up but low level light would be on due to no coolant loss

you need to slap yourself :):)

I bet you've seen a lot more than of that than the rest of us, too :D

Yep, mine did exactly the same when the black top failed - guage was fine. Mine was at Awesome at a RR day, Jim came over afterwards and pointed it out and told me exactly what the problem was. "Seen it loads". Dealer swapped the sensor in the thermostat housing (confirmed on job sheet) and the problem went away...

I've found myself with this problem now - ive had the ole engine beeps when coolant level is fine many times before but this is different as there are no beeps.

Its like there is a loose connection on the sensor for the analogue guage as it will intermittently swap between nothing and 90 degs at random intervals, this started happening after i drove through a large "puddle" after the flooding in sheffield.

So where do i look to find this faulty guage?
