long story short - managed to crack a weld on the base of my seat upright and having thought i'd should be easy for me to have welded back up i suddenly thought - airbag!!!!!

anyone know the effect of a mig welder on an expolsive airbag?
obviously disconnect battery but what else can i do to prevent it going bang and deploying??

The airbag's pretty far up, so if you're only welding the base you should have a safe margin

might be worth covering the rest of the seat with a dust-sheet or something anyway though ... and have some water/and extinguisher handy ;)

yeah i was taking it as a given to have water and an extinguisher handy. i was meaning what effect would passing a large current thru it have on the airbag? is it isolated enough to not cause a problem?

lol. At a guess I'd suggest disconnecting the batery if not removing the seat and standing well clear!!

Airbags are an explosive, and are set off by current. Try speaking with a garage, when having my exhaust made on the Polo they fitted a special module to the battery to stop and power surging around the car and killing the battery/stereo/anything electric. Maybe a garage would do the same for that?
