Rust prevention/Painting of brake disks

Hi Guys,

I have Brembos on my Ibiza and it really annoys me how much bare metal (non braking) is exposed on the disk, which instantly rusts up!! I tried spraying the surfaces with heat resistant silver exhaust paint but the rust has started to come through that too.

Has anyone got a better method for preventing rust on the exposed metal parts of the disk?

I was thinking using this zinc rich spray to prevent the rust from returning and then paint over with the silver exhaust paint.....

any views on this?

Cheers,
Greg

I wouldnt personally touch the braking part of my disk brakes, but if you are serious then maybe ebay 'acid etch primer' will stick to the surface better once you have cleaned up the rust thats on there and then paint... good luck

I Think your missing what he is trying to say... He doesn't want to paint the disk... He wants to paint the inner part of the disk that doesn't touch the pads hence the bit that looks rusty on the inside.... I used normal black heat resistant paint on mine... worked a treat..

Im Not going anywhere near the braking surface of the disk!!! read the original post. The car would have to be left unused for a while for that to start rusting and after a few drives the action of the pads would get rid of any rust!.

Its only the bare metal 'hub' section of the disk that i intend to paint, the surface that is perpendicular to the braking surface. On the brembos this is massive and rusts quickly which is unsightly. There is no way painting this would effect the braking efficiency.

Thanks for the responses but probably best to read the post properley before chucking insults about ;)

Daz, How long ago did you spray the disks? And are there any signs of the rust returning? I did mine about 6 months ago and its already starting to come through again. :(

I cleaned the disk up with a wire brush attachment on a power drill before i sprayed them last time until there wereno signs of rust at all prior to applying the paint...... bt the rust came back :(

Must be getting on for nearly a year now and no signs of any rust coming through...

I just used Hammerite, it's heat resistant and can be applied on top of rust.

thats what I would use too. but as said get a wire brush over the rust and job done. Might aswell do the hub part as well, as I hate to sight of the corrosion through the rim (still have to do mine though :cartman:)

I used a wire wheel on a grinder to clean them up first.

Also done any bare metal I could see whilst I was there.

If your like me and you hate looking at rust everytime you take the wheel off I would do this. Not much effort, no masking and only take a few hours.
