Rough running

 Started car this morning and it was running really rough and sounded like it was only running on two cylinders, also there was a little bit of smoke from the exhaust.I gave it some revs and it cleared and idled as normal. The engine is a 1.6, has anyone else had this happen?

Funny you should mention that, i also have 1.6 and the other morning i started it and it appeared to be revving itself without me touching the accelerator!!

Was most strange but hasnt happened again since!

Ive had the same, was sometimes a bit coughy and initially hunted for revs. I have now had 2 tanks of Shell V -Power petrol and it seems to have sorted it out. I used to use BP normal or Texaco. Could be dirty fuel.
Do you get crud under the oil filler cap? Mine is the Mk 2 1.6 Stylance for ref.
Andrew.

I do a lot of short runs, too and from work, with a blast at weekends, prob why I get crud, can often sea its just condensation on the filler cap.
Think cold weather confuses the choke etc.

I filled up with BP unleaded a couple of days ago but previous to this I filled up with BP ultimate , perhaps it could be dirty fuel? It did seem to run smoother with the BP ultimate and I think fuel consumption was better, perhaps I will refuel with ultimate next time.

Hey, 1.6 Stylance here too. Have found this quite a few times. Definately runs better with optimax/ultimate fuel, quieter and more responsive.

Ive found that, especially in cold weather the engine seems to do its own thing, with quick revving around the idle mark (turning the aircon off seems to chill this out) with a hard rev clearing it out somewhat. Ive also had it stall a few seconds after starting cus of this, so had to use the accelerator to keep it running at idle.

I find the engine doing what it wants quite often, such as when pulling away, still on the clutch at just over idle it will rev the engine as if it thinks its going to stall. And the engine braking effect seems to differ, sometimes requiring the foot brake to slow down (2nd/3rd gear 15-20mph searching for car parking spaces).

Ive also felt a strange rocking while cruising about 30-40mph in 3rd/4th and looked down to see the rev counter bouncing up and down between, say, 2500rpm and 3000rpm. No idea what this is either.

Has anyone else found this at all or is it some bad driving technique I must have? Any fixes wlecome too, as it is due for service any time now.
