Roof Bars - UPDATE!

Has anyone got roof bars on their 3-door Mk4 Ibiza ?

Just wondering what makes are available, and what kind of price I'm looking at.
Ideally I'm after a set with changeable ends, so they could also be used on my g/f's Focus if we bought the right ends.

I have the ibiza specific bars..........and there....crap. Quite definately not usable on the focus, the bars are not very long. Also the pins that locate on the front ones are a pain to fit on ure own without scratching the paint.

i use Thule bars, total cost for

cross bars
foot mount
fitting kit
ski-rack
£180

the fitting kits are about £20, meaning the rest will fit any car.

3-door cars require a "front-to-back" stabiliser and different foot mount, not sure of cost?

OK so the dealer Ibiza bars are out then !

Might have a look at the Thule stuff, although good kit I suspect it might be dearer than I was wanting to pay...

Interesting about the stabiliser for the 3-door cars, this suggests the bars only fit in the front door aperture, which means only a limited amount of separation between them and therefore something else is required to stop larger items see-sawing on the roof !

3doors dont need stabiliser (well I haven't used one and swing on mine).

Thule

www.roofbox.co.uk

Bike stayed on even at 90+.

Is a real faff (the instructions give you distance from top of windscreen, etc - so I put some sticky labels inside the door seals bit of my roof so I know where to put the bars).

just going from past experience, had to use them on my 2 door rover 220, but that was 10 years ago, things have obviously changed

Update...

Well I took the plunge and bought some Thule roof bars...

Bought from roofracks.co.uk, they were cheaper than Halfords and had all the right bits in stock.

For a 3 or 5 door 2002-> Ibiza, or a 2003-> Cordoba, you need the following bits:

Bars: 761 (black rectangular) or 861 (ally aero bar)
Foot pack: 750
Adaptor kit: 1266
Locks: 544 (Optional)
(See here )

The aero bars look nicer but were too wide for my bike rack, so I stuck with the black bars which are cheaper anyway.

Total cost is:
761 Bars - £22.50
750 Foot kit - £42.95
1266 Kit - £19.95
544 Locks - £15.95 (I didn't bother with these though)

Delivery is either £6 std or £10 next day.

Got them today and they're worth EVERY penny, a superbly engineered bit of kit.

You don't need ANY tools to put them together or fit to the car, there's built-in gauges on the bars so you can space the feet apart accurately (measurements are provided in the car-specific instructions), a little tape measure so you can space the bars apart correctly on the car, and 4 little stickers to put on the feet so you know which way round they all go on the car. Eveything just clicks together easily.

Have a look on the Thule website.... www.thule.co.uk I think, or look on that site I bought mine from.

I still got my bike rack from Halfords, does the job, not quite as cool as Thule though (hey it rhymes :D )

Funny you should say that...

I have still got them. I'll probably keep the bars (if they are the right size for the Passat) but the feet/adapters are looking for a new home. Only ever been used twice !

Let me do some checks on what I need for the Passat and I'll get back to you...

Atera Giros are good if you are going to set them up for one bike and only that bike. They hold them really well (unless it is a funny shape frame) and have 4 points of contact.

If you intend to use the rack with more than one bike then be wary - they take a little while to setup for a particular bike.
