Hi,

Recent owner of a 170FR (FL) 2010... It's got the standard radio and white MFD. I want to upgrade to either the RNS315 or 510...

My first question is - is this a simple and straightforward job? Will I still have all the steering wheel controls?

I have noticed that there's a small grey box at the top of my windscreen? Is this a DAB antenna? And if so does this mean I wont have to route the satnav Arial down the a pillar?

Also I've noticed that I don't have any Bluetooth options for my phone? Is that normal? Can it be something I could activate using VCDS and the new head unit? Or is it just a case of I don't have it.

Thanks in advance

You want the RNS315 over the 510

Yes and yes. You'll also get the AC controls, fan speed and bits visually displayed on the stereo screen

You'll need the fascia panel, GPS antennae, maybe a microphone and maybe a DAB Ariel

I have noticed that there's a small grey box at the top of my windscreen? Is this a DAB antenna?

No idea, you'll have to trace the wire and see what the end looks like

Also I've noticed that I don't have any Bluetooth options for my phone? Is that normal? Can it be something I could activate using VCDS and the new head unit? Or is it just a case of I don't have it.

Yea not all cars came with Bluetooth.

If you get the RNS-315 unit it comes with Bluetooth built in, no need to active anything it should just work and link-in with your steering controls and MFD.
The RNS-510 needs a separate Bluetooth module installing, which will be a pain.

Thanks for the consice reply! Looks like I want a RNS315 then... I was swayed towards the 510 for the larger screen but from what I've read the 315 does the job just fine.

Best get shopping for all the extra bits too!

Thanks again

I've got my eye on a cheap RNS 315 on eBay at the moment
The grey box in the windscreen is your auto wiper module. I have the RNS 310, but I fitted a dab add on and changed my GPS aerial for a genuine version with the dab aerial built in.

So this is a dab and GPS antenna? What about the wiring that goes to the back of the head unit?

Sorry all these antennas and cables are confusing... I've managed to nab an RNS315 off eBay for £100 though!

That aerial is DAB and GPS in 1. You can run a DAB/GPS cable from the aerial down the side if the roof lining to the head unit. I already had a factory GPS cable fitted, so I only needed a different DAB cable as it was a different connection on my add on

Thanks for your help... I'm struggling to find any GPS or dab cables that will be long enough to get to the back of the head unit... I'm guessing I'm going to need male to female also??

I suppose a lot of people that do this just get aftermarket antennas that just sit under the roof lining?

Fakra cable, it's female at the aerial end you need. I cant see any clear pictures of the back of the head unit to see if it's male. 2m should be plenty. I was just looking for you as I have my old aerial still. It's the same cable for DAB and GPS so buy 2. If its female male then 2 of these.

That if the head unit has a male connector on it. The inner metal part being the male part not the plastic to prevent confusion.

Looks like female. Thanks for the links and info. You've been a massive help. EDIT - infact that's male isn't it! So I'd need female to male

I can't see inside the connector is there a hole or prong. It's not the plastic part that denotes male or female on those

I can see the top connector(nav) is male so assuming the blue dab is the same you need female to female.

Bingfu Fakra Z Water Blue Female to Female Vehicle Aerial Antenna Extension Cable 3m for Car Stereo Android Head Unit GPS Navigation FM AM Radio DAB Radio 4G LTE TEL Telematics Bluetooth Module https://amzn.eu/d/97baTdS

I think 3m is the best bet, I can measure but you are looking at the rear to the a pillar, down to the footwell and to the centre of the dash

White double connection is your fm radio. Depending on what you have when you take it out its either like for like or you need an adapter

Update!

That's it all in, fitted and working! What an absolute pig of a job! Has basically taken me all day yesterday and a bit of this morning...

So first impressions are great! Sounds much better, sat Nav works although I'm guessing it'll need an update?

I've managed to connect my phone via Bluetooth but when I call someone they can't hear me?

Am I going to need to use VCDS to set unit up properly... I've heard you can make it so that your revering sensors pop up on screen?

Looking good, epic job to do in the end.

I used VCDS to put my sensor as a visual display. It was a long time ago and I'm not sure what I did now lol. I'm sure there will be a guide on here or elsewhere as that's how I knew about it.

I wonder if you need an external microphone? My 310 is factory fitted and I believe there's one in the A pillar.

Microphone should live in the plastic trim bit by the rear-view mirror/cabin lights.

Run the cable up the A-pillar
