Retrofitting folding door mirrors

Hi everybody.

I have been trying to find out if it is possible to retrofit folding door mirrors to a 63 plate Leon st 1.6 with tech pack, I am lead to believe that the connectors for both mirrors are the same, would it simply be a case of just swapping the mirrors for FR mirrors and changing the switch on the door and possibly messing with VCDS? Has anybody done this mod ? Help will be greatly appreciated thanks.

Beware. This forum started as a Cupra forum. The majority of people on here have Cupra's and 184 FR's which all come (AFAIK) with folding mirrors as standard. So you are probably the first person on here to attempt the mod on the MK3.

I would be very surprised if the door controller was any different to that of the Cupra or FR but it will be worth looking into before committing untold gold to purchase the mirrors. The adaptation options through VAG-COM should indicate whether they can be enabled in your door controllers.

Post a scan if you can (or just the door module part numbers).

By the way, both me and my wife very rarely bother to fold the mirrors. The novelty wares off pretty quickly. Handy if you need to though to get into a garage etc.

I completely understand that mate just wondered if anybody knew or not lol, I'm sure the connectors are the same 8 pin on all mk3's but like you said if sooner be certain before committing to paying out, I'm sure the novelty would wear off quick it's more for when I'm in big car parks sick of people bashing my mirrors in, and then there is the novelty of course but all noveltys wear off eventually right ? Where can I find the door module part numbers ? Sorry I'm still relatively new to seat's.

From a Vag-COM Log (HW P/N for door controllers in RED):

Mine (Cupra 280):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 42: Door Elect, Driver (J386) Labels: 5QX-959-X93-42.clb
Part No SW: 5Q4 959 593 B HW: 5Q4 959 593 B
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 52: Door Elect, Pass. (J387) Labels: 5QX-959-X92-52.clb
Part No SW: 5Q4 959 592 B HW: 5Q4 959 592 B
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Wife's FR TDI:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 42: Door Elect, Driver (J386) Labels: 5QX-959-X93-42.clb
Part No SW: 5Q4 959 593 C HW: 5Q4 959 593 B
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 52: Door Elect, Pass. (J387) Labels: 5QX-959-X92-52.clb
Part No SW: 5Q4 959 592 C HW: 5Q4 959 592 B
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both of these modules have folding mirror support.

You may also need to run additional wires from the controller to the new switch to support the additional functionality. OEM's tend to fit harnesses that are tailored to the options in the car. They don't just put a one size fits all harness as this adds cost and weight and unused connectors need to be secured etc...

Hi stu_m, so if your addresses from the modules are the same as his FR does that mean that nothing needs modifying in respect to the wiring ect so it would simply be just a mirror replacement with FR ones ? I have vag com so if any settings need changing that wouldn't be a problem, it's all just baffling at the moment and I don't want to buy the mirrors without being sure that I won't need to do any additional stuff to make it work except a new switch of course, but then again I wouldn't even use the switch to fold the mirrors I would program it to fold when I lock the car instead.

Stevo92,

If the hardware / software part numbers are the same, it should just be a mater of re-coding the module.
If the additional wires are missing between the door control module and the switch, it should just be a case of adding a repair wire (pre-crimped wire link available from the dealer).
Theoretically, if all you want to do is fold when locking, a hold of the lock button for a few seconds should do the trick as the mirror and all associated wires plug directly into the door control module.

Where are you based? I don't mind lending a hand if you aren't hundreds of miles away.

Well that's just it, think it's just a matter of swapping mirror for one with the motor for power fold in, I live in stoke on Trent off j15 m6, any idea how I take the mirror off for me to look at the wiring ? Thanks.

basically you need to replace door unit and run cable from this unit to mirrors plus do the codding on both unit dont need to run any cable from unit to bqm as the command is run thru the Can bus
