Replacement Leon Cupra R Engine, AUQ or BAM?!

Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been asked before, I've done some searching and can find some info, but could do with a bit of help! I'm looking at options to replace a dead AMK engine in a Leon Cupra R (melted piston and head from overheating and running without water).

So with current engine, I have all the components (manifolds, turbo, intercoolers, injectors etc.) but the block and head are damaged to the point where I doubt it is worth trying to repair them.

I've been looking at prices for the BAM / AMK engines and they are pretty high, about £1400, epecially seeing as that only gets you the engine (+ starter, alternator, water pump) but no turbo, intercoolers, radiator etc.

On top of that I guess I need new gaskets for the manifolds and I'd be very tempted to do the water pump and timing belt since I'd have easy access, so that's probably another £150 or so.

I'm wondering if I might be able to replace the block/head with an AUQ engine, as I'm only planning to run Stage1/2 remap on the engine, so max 280bhp really. Even though I believe CR and internals may be a little different, is the setup ok with that power from other's experience? Other issue is going to be whether all the electrics will swap over and whether I can use the AMK ECU (which has a 265 map already), any thoughts?!

Other issue is there seems to be quite a bit of play in the turbo shaft, is that just the bearing that needs replacing, or best to go with a recon or new turbo?

Thanks

You can, i have a AUQ engined cupra and am looking at putting the ko4 turbo on, all the manifolds fit, you have all the BAM stuff to swap over, i have got the cupra r inlet and twin intercoolers on mine, not sure if you will need a remap though. the internals will be ok for the power you want to run, i got all the info from back draft, before i started my conversion

I've found plenty of BAMs about, but very few AMKs. Tempted by the cheaper AUQ route, but I'd prefer to have the correct engine code on the V5 as would help the resale value.

Thanks for responses guys.

Was just discussing engine change route with a mate at work. Out of interest what's the easiest way to get them out?

I've got a forklift at work with a crane attachment so was planning to lift it out the top, but sometimes dropping the engine out the bottom is easier. Gonna attach the gearbox out the car, will make clutch alignment much easier. Do the driveshafts come off the gearbox easily, or do you need to take the arb and wishbone joints off to pull the legs outwards?

think it is simply a different map.. you should be able to fit a bam in place of a amk as you will need to recode everything anyway.
the auq is ony a 180 bhp motor with the inlet manifold facing the wrong way however these can be changed
they also a smaller turbo
