Replace MPH Instrument Cluster with km/h version

Hi All,

I brought my trusted 2016 Seat Leon 5f 1.6TDI to Ireland from the UK and I am considering changing the instrument panel to a km/h speedometer display. I can buy the binnacle second hand for about €100 but I do have the following questions which I hope someone here might be kind enough to answer for me:

Is it just a matter of removing the old instrument cluster and replacing it with the km/h version or does it additionally require some coding via VCDS?

I read somewhere that the odometer will bet set to the greater value of the two devices (e.g. if the second hand binnacle has 50,000 km and my car has 90.000 km then the displayed version will be 90,000 km as that is the greater value) - do you know if there is any truth to this?

Is there a difference between the Left Hand Drive instrument binnacle and the right hand drive version?

If it is anything like swapping a Virtual Cockpit, then it won't be a straight swap. Will need the encoding to the car, and unless its a brand new unit, it will display the mileage of the car it same off of. It can't be altered via coding.

Some people offer services where they can increase the mileage, but that involved plugging it in and it being made to think its doing 1000mph for however long is needed.

If you look at the car settings on the infotainment unit you can change the speed units from miles to km.

You can then have a digital kph speed displayed on the multi-function display. This will be a quick workaround. This is what we used on our MQB cars whilst living overseas.

The VAG left hand drive units tend to have kph only, whereas the UK right hand drive vehicles will have both miles/km around the dials.

Thanks for your reply, I should have mentioned in my initial post that I had already done that - I have the digital display in km/h. It's just that I'm left with a redundant analogue dial (mph speedo) and means that I can't use the digital display for anything else but speed. Its fine as a temporary solution though.

So based on Damo's reply above it appears it will need recoding - just to make it work let alone the difference in the odometer distance. That might dissuade me from going any further with the idea.

Yeah I assumed he knew that, sadly if you want to use the middle screen for anything less like Sat Nav Directions, you can't. The KM/H on the analogue dyno is terrible on the UK MPH version.

Virtual Cockpit is sooooo good for flipping between UK/MPH and Europe/KPH.
