Remote locking

Ok i know what you're thinking before you've even read this 'here we go'

But it's just a quick question

I'm picking up (assuming it passes its mot) a 99 cupra 16v tomorrow. When i went to see the car i noticed the guy only had the key without the remote on it, when i asked him he said it's the only one he got with the car.

I'll check once i have the car which type of system it uses, but the question i have is - if i buy the right type of remote from ebay, is there any reason i couldnt just program the remote part(witouth the key bit on the bottom) and use it to remotely lock/unlock the car??

Obviously i'd still have to use the non remote key to start it but that isnt exactly the end of the world. More to the point it wont cost me £120 from a dealer.

as long as the car does have remote locking then yes, also you could get the new key cut and swap the transponer chip out of your old kep and put it in the new ket then it would all work :)

Well that's the thing, i've assumed it should have it as it's a 99 but i'll check properly when i get it. I thought about the transponder too but i've never taken one out before and as it's the only key i'll have if i mess it up i'll be fecked!

Wouldnt need to as the transponder is already coded to the car. If getting a new key that is, the remote is dead easy

yeah dead easy to do, as for taking the key apart 10 sec job and if you want to put it back to how it was you can with no marks at all, my Vario didn't have remote locking where as the Ibiza did, so I have fitted it to the Vario and take the key apart myself and swapped transponders, if you want I can post some pics of the key apart if tht will help you?

That would be good thanks. So i take it i dont have to break the original key then? They dont look like they split like the remote ones do

sorry for busting in on the thread but I'm in the same situation since my last working lock decided to fall apart last week. So, I'm thinking prob best just to get the remote working. Only got the non-remote key but the car defo has radio locking. From reading the other threads, it sounds like I can transfer the chip out and re-program the locking code with the key in the ignition. sooo, question is...

Would this key be OK?

my key looks like this (yeah, I know, that's how it came out!):
