They tend to "rumble" before the wheel starts wobbling on the axle. To start with, they'll probably only do it when loaded up whilst cornering - so a rumble when turning right indicates left rear bearing on its' way, and vice versa. A rear wheel bearing kit is pretty cheap, and in the case of rear drums they're a doddle to fit.

As an aside, a flat spotted rear tyre will also make rumbly noises - worth checking them...

OH MY GoD

did the side i thought it was and thought oh well, ill do the other side too... i had no idea the nose was from the second wheel. it would have been well brutal if id have driven after changing just the one bearing.

!!!!!!!

You should have seen it! it was in numerous pieces and ou wouldnt of even recognised it as a bearing! its only been doin it a couple of days as well. anyway, changed the bearings and now ive decided to paint my drums...again so im just waiting for the first coat to dry an then ill stick another couple on before i leave it todry...

oh and part of the bearing is still stuck on the stub axel... couldnt get it off at first so ill have to give it a go when i go bk outside.

On the subject of wheel bearings, had both rears changed during my service in mid Feb (due to brakes change), although my car failed it's MOT on excess movement in rear bearing grrr. Taking it back to my dodgey mech straight after work, having it just adjusted hopefully, as you're not meant to tighten too much, so can sometimes come loose after a 1000 miles or so, were the words of my mechanic when I called him thismorning. Whether there's truth in that or I just need to give him a slap ...we'll c

And yes, front bearings seem'd to take a beating on my 1.4 when it had 17"s

well, i started putting one side on, it went on fine looks the part now i painted them again... went to the otherside... put it on, wouldnt fully go on, bearing got stuck on the axel again and wouldnt come off so ive just wasted a bearing with an attempt. back to ECP then for yet another bearing. just gonna line it up next time and jus batter it into place.
