Rear brake dragging...

Hi guys.

Returning from xmas shenanigans the other day, stepped on the brakes just 'round the corner from home and not a lot happened.

Some digging around points to the rear near-side brake caliper dragging on the brake disk, causing friction therefore heating the brake fluid. Over a long journey at speed it appears to be enough to cause the brake fluid to heat up substantially.

The other day I noticed a loud 'clunk' whilst reversing backwards after releasing the handbrake. Didn't pay it too much mind at the time but wondering if this has any bearing on it.

I'm also wondering whether the handbrake cable is not releasing properly on that side. I looked at the adjuster in the car, and it does appear that the cable on the nearside is pulled up around 1/4" more. Is it worth adjusting this out to see if this has any effect?

Any other ideas also welcome.

Thanks and hny etc.

Mark

They're Mk3 gti type calipers in the first place, and they do seize.

Thanks guys.

Will have a look 2 moro depending on the weather etc.

Do I need any special tools?

Any tips for removing a rear wheel that seems seized on to the hub?

you will need a piston retracting tool (£20 halfords)

for the stuck wheel. - if there is a centre cap on the wheel, remove it & lube it up with some WD40 (or similar)

then kick the sh1t out of it while lieing on your back :) working opposite sides at a time

Point taken..there are 2 types of mk3 calipers, the later ones have a return spring internal in the calipers.......u can also use mk4 aswell, only difference is that there made of alu.
good mod...no seizeing and a better firmer handbrake.
i did the mod on my mk2 golf gti
