Why is nothing in life ever simple?:shrug:

Went to change the rear discs and pads today and everything from the start seemed to be a nightmare every bolt was so so tight.

But the real problem happened when winding the caliper back, ive got the caliper wind back tool (cube) and the bit is twisting but its not pushing the caliper back :(

So i now need new rear calipers aswell which im also going to have to get a garage to fit it all now as dont want to mess about with changing the brake fluid myself.

So what i thought was going to be a £50 job just for the discs and pads will turn out to be a £300 job.

£50 discs n pads
£173 rear calipers (got to pay £242 but get £69 back when i take old ones back to shop)
£60 to fit the calipers and discs and pads
£20ish for the brake fluid

So this pushes my remap back a few more months

done mine last night and that silly cube is rubbish took ages with that but you need to really push and wind the caliper back hard cause i was there for a while with it not moving untill my mate held the caliperon the carrier and i put presure on it to wind them back .. have you tryed applyin pressure when winding

Clap the brake hose and open the bleed nipple this makes it easier, tbh this is the best way to retract the pistons anyway as it avoids flipping the master cylinder seals

My mate was doing it for me so not sure how hard he was pressing on it,

i could see the bit the tool grips on turning tho and he was twisting it for ages and it wasnt going back.

We had the brake fluid bottle open under the bonnet so it could push the pressure out aswell.

So do you think we should have another go and get me to hold the caliper and him to wind it or does that fact that it was twisting just not going back mean its broken like we thought it was?

probs best trying to use one off them wind back tools as sometimes it needs quite a bit of force to get back.... did with mine anyways.....bent the bar on mine winding it back.

He told me he was pushing it really hard, and the caliper bit was twisting all the time but just wasnt going back at all so looked like it was broken behind the bit you twist.

it took me ages to do mine and i could of never done it on my own mate alot of force to get mine in its easier to take disc of and put caliper on the carrier and the your mate to push the caliper towards you and you wind it back in clock wise as well as putting pressure on the tool it took me 3 hours to do\ the rear and half hour to do the front, also i took the hand brake cable off the caliper this made it easyer.. also did your mate have hand break on or off ...

doesnt sound like the calipers need changing tbh,Just need to get them back on the threads, i had the same problem until i figured out how the tool worked properly lol

I agree with that, and get along to Halfords for the proper wind back tool as this job is never easy on an older than a couple of year car. First time round with my B5 Passat at 2 years it was okay, two year later when removing the pads to clean up the rear brakes - total murder to get them moving back in. One thing though, the exact position of the handbrake levers seems to be critical I seem to remember - either way spend your money on a wind back tool, I think the cube might even extend the wind back tool to use with other cars.

i spent about half an our trying to get the pistons bk in, the tool i got frm gsf has a brake pad shaped plate that sits in the caliper, when winding the tool in im physicaly forces the piston in! Didnt put the pad plate in first time! When i did it it took less than 2 mins!!

But the cube is turning the caliper bit and its turning the caliper bit around but its not going back on its thread so if its not going back on its thread then its come away from the thread as if it was still on the thread it would be winding back in, instead of just spining and not going back in

use a wind back tool and it will work... even the force your mate pushing wont be enough to get it back in... how far is the piston sticking out

The piston was just about all the way out as no meat left on the pad.

The cube is a wind back tool which turn the piston fine but the piston is not winding back.

It doesnt look like the piston is working correctly due to the damage on the disc at the mo its all rusted up like the left rear brake hasnt worked in awhile

I want to believe that it will work with putting more force but the piston bit winds fine just isnt going back, and as its on a thread by winding it then it should go back no matter what force is put on it as its threaded, but my piston must have come off the thread somehow

The cube works fine, if the piston has come out as far as it will go, it doesnt just "come off its threads". If the piston wont wind back, (regardless of what tool us use) it is usually a good indication that the winding mech is broken, this is a common problem on cars with high mileage that use the wind back on the rear brakes.

If the brake discs are as corroded and worn more on the one side then that is a good indication that the caliper is not working correctly.

i had this problem with mine... it was spinning but not going back...thought it was f00ked and needed a new caliper,

so decided to push the piston completly out of the caliper and have look to see why, the seal on the piston was broken so i replaced that. the thread starts futher in the caliper and i has to push the piston back before it started to wind back on the thread
