Problem selecting reverse gear

I have a 2000 model Cupra 20VT and noticed today that it was very stiff selecting reverse gear, it would not select at all at first, but after a bit of faffing about with the lever, it eventually selected it, but was very stiff from the neutral position pushing it forward. Could it just be the linkage that needs adjustment? The car had a new clutch and flywheel 18 months ago so it's obviously not the clutch on it's way out. Selection of all other gears is fine with no problems.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Id say the one of the cables needs adjusting or replacing

Thanks Stu, I take it that it's a cable operated clutch and not hydraulically operated, is this the cable you mean?

its probley gona be the cable from gearbox to gearstick had this problem on mine it melted on the exhaust heat shield?
