Powertrain issues

I have the 150 bhp mild-hybrid version of the MK4 Leon. Sometimes, especially after starting the drive or during the drive in slow traffic there pops up a series of errors on the digital instrument cluster. The issue starts with loss of power and the errors include: Engine RPM limited to 1800, 1500, 1200, descending rapidly, then it shows errors about the 48V system, start-stop system etc.

At that point I just drove to the side and rebooted the car, the issue went away and I kept on driving. However, is this some known error with the Leon or should I be worried there's something broken such as a sensor of some sort? I'm asking here because the local service / repairshop is taking over two months to respond now...

I'm pretty certain the RPM was a tad higher than usual whenever the problem occurred. I am on relatively old version, the part number of infotainment is 5FA035862C, HW number is H56 and software number is 1664. There seems to be a new software update available at the shop, I wonder if that could fix the issue or it simply needs to be properly identified and fixed?

I have tried to google the issues regarding Leon and other cars with the same powertrain from VW but I had no luck, I don't have an OBD scanner and I am not really interested in getting one, this should definitely be fixed under warranty.

PS. Yes, now that the problem occurred again I am trying to, more aggressively, get in touch with the local retailer and their service center to get this thing fixed.

Have you had the update 90T4 think that’s it as this is an update to the 48v system and to remove errors. Also once they done that you can get the infotainment update to 1896. Seems there is loads of updates. Get your car booked in.

No I don't think so. I had one update done at the shop but they didn't exactly tell me what it was. Now there's some Q-service pack available but I have absolutely no clue what update it includes. I guess they use their own naming scheme for these updates here locally as I cannot find anything by searching that update on Google.

I'm going to get the updates and see if the problem persists. I'm just a bit worried because the customer service did not answer my question about the issue so it doesn't seem like it's a well known one.

Thanks for the tips :)

That’s the one Q service pack it’s an update on the 48v system. If you want to know what updates/recalls are available for your car get yourself signed up to seat Erwin it’s what they use for all the tpi’s only downside it’s £7hr or £30 for a full day. You know what the updates are for then. That’s how I got mine updated to 1896 as dealer kept saying no updates available and I gave them the tpi number and surprise surprise they said yes it’s available and get the car booked in. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I got the 90T4 and 90U2 installed today. Sadly I lost cruise control, navigation, and full link. Took it back to the shop for them to fix it properly. Can't say whether it fixed the powertrain issues, although I remain hopeful. Can't say I'm even remotely satisfied with how many systems were inoperable after the updates. You'd expect them to do some tests on the vehicle before giving it back to the customer, no?

What was the 90U2 update? Not seen anything about this?

According to some German forums it could be the 1896 update for 16xx versions. My local service shop gives little to no information about what the updates contain. Some indication of it being the TPI 2066692 for 16xx models. I'm not too familiar with these updates.

Well, 90T4 didn't help at all. Same warnings today, however, after turning the engine on again it was vibrating like crazy. Instantly turned it off and called towing service. Seems to be the first and last VAG product I'll spend any money on, nice.

This is also happening to me. Did the local retailer and their service center have any more info since the 90T4 update?

The issue occurred again and when I started the car it was vibrating a lot. I shut it down and had it towed to service. The MHEV generator/electric motor unit was faulty and had to be replaced under warranty. So it was a mechanical problem all along.

Thanks. Mine had gone to the service centre for a software update to fix it. I will tell them about the MHEV unit on Monday.

You're welcome. I hoped the issue was software related but the update didn't help at all. I have had the car for a few weeks now and haven't had issues with it, so hopefully they diagnosed and fixed the issue properly. At least it's looking promising.
