power steering help

hi guys i know this is a ibiza site but i need help i got a vw golf mk3 my wife said i went up the street and could not turn the wheel i thought yeah but i could not either checked the fluid and it was empty it was full 2 days ago the pump has always made noises any ideas guys and girls thanks

Could be the powersteering pump aswell. When mine went I had just drove 20 miles from work. Went in my house and came out half an hour/45 minutes later and there was power-steering fluid all over the road under my car.

so if the pump goes does the fluid come out and where is the pump

reservoir feeds fluid to the pump (low pressure side) through hose #4

fluid then pressurises in pump and leaves through the metal pipe above to the rack hence banjo's + sealing washers

once pressure is used in the rack it returns to the tank

pump itself is usually right at the bottom corner of the engine so hose #4 is prone to ravages of road crap

hose #5 under the reservoir has a habit of getting caked in it's own fluid and rotting away/seeping fluid too
