Power cuts & jerking.

Hi everyone!

I own a Seat Leon FR 184 (DSG) 2.0 TDI, which I’ve had for nearly five years without any major issues—until about four months ago.

Initially, the problem seemed to be resolved (at least partially), but unfortunately, it has now returned.

Symptoms:

The first sign of trouble was a rough idle, where the engine seemed to "skip a beat."
While driving, the car would intermittently lose power, with the RPM needle dropping to zero before suddenly spiking back up. This would persist throughout the journey but would disappear after the car was switched off and left for a few hours.

After taking it to my mechanic, a diagnostic scan pointed to a faulty microswitch in the DSG, which was replaced. The problem seemed to be resolved—until recently, when it returned, this time more severe.

Current Issues:

  • The car runs fine when cold—no power loss or cutouts.
  • Once warm, the engine cuts out at low revs.
  • Power loss occurs intermittently while driving (only when warm).

I have another appointment with my mechanic tomorrow, but I’m skeptical that the microswitch was the root cause. Otherwise, the issue wouldn’t have resurfaced.

Has anyone experienced similar problems and managed to find a fix?

For reference, I’ve followed all standard maintenance guidelines, including regular oil changes (every 40k miles or earlier). The car currently has 90k miles on the clock.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Crank sensor has caused similar cutting out issues.
I’ve seen that on similar posts today, will mention it to the mechanic.

Am driving it in ‘manual’ at the moment, using the paddles. No issues at all when using paddles, strange!

Follow on from above…

Just been to the mechanic who put it on the Snap-on diagnostic tool, the only faults were the low beam.

He has suggested replacing the diesel filter again (it was serviced 4 months ago with all filters replaced). In case there is water in the housing.

Unsure if that will fix the issue, but will update once done.

If it is OK when using the paddles, I don't see how changing the filter will help.
