Power and speaker cable

Can I use normal speaker cable (ie for indoor stereo's) in cars? Got loads of the stuff hanging around.

Also with power cable (for an amp) can you buy the stuff from b&q or the like?

Hi,
I'd steer clear of some of the "free" black/white stuff you get with a home hi-fi.
Try get yourself some good high copper content, oxygen free cables.
You'll be suprised at the good deals you can get from legit dealers, better prices than you'll get at B&Q for much better quality cables.
(Four Square dealers are usually very good)
I got mine from Megawatt in Runcorn and got a fabulous deal on some Audison Connections cables. Very high copper content and very flexible which helps a lot in a car.
A lot of the stuff on ebay will be of lower copper content. (especially with copper prices rising so fast in the last year or so)

Also make sure you buy the correct gauge power cable.
There is a thread in the FAQ section of ICECAVERN.COM which explains exactly how to work out what gauge you need with a simple calculation.
(I mentioned it recently in a similar thread on SCN.)

Cheers,
Steve

Edit : I seem to remember there was a reasonable looking dealer with a big shop near the Asda (Hyson Green??? near the Goose fair ground??) in Nottingham otherwise give Megawatt a ring. Great guys and very helpful.

Yeah I know the place your on about in Hyson Green, been there once I think, can't remember the name of it though (its part of a chain). I went to see what halfords had and ended up getting a Fusion wiring kit as it has all the little bits and bobs I need
