hey.
car was perfectly fine last night, no problems at all

this morning started her up first time, but the radiator fan came on for about 3 seconds, then went off, then came on etc etc for over half an hour whilst i was driving!

my MPG according to the computer was stuck at 5mpg, and my average of 35mpg went down to 20mpg over the period.

i thought that was really strange.. then as i was pulling off on to a slip road my rev counter went crazy and started jumping up and down really quickly, but my car wasn't actually revving at all. it then cut out and wouldn't start

took an hour for the recovery van to turn up, he managed to start it first time.

they suspect the ecu and coolant temp sender, which i knew needed to be replaced so they are doing that.

does it sound like an ECU problem??

has anyone relocated there ECU before? or covered it with something.

i cant risk having this happen again.

thanks

Relocating the ecu could be troublesome as some of the wire lengths might be specific for readings etc. Cover it up but make sure whatever you do its not air tight or pester Phil W to get the finished cad stuff to forge so they can make the covers.

fan is not controlled via the ecu, i'd say a wiring issue. i'd check all wiring around the fan 'relay + fuse box' area see if anything has touched.

just got off the phone with the garage.. its fully of water :( been shorting out in 3 places on the casing

they are gonna dry it out and clean it for me and check the connections. i've asked them to make me a casing for it to protect it in the future, so i'm gonna see if that works.

about the radiator fan though... so thats definately not controlled by the ECU?

the 'relay + fuse box'.. do you mean under the steering wheel? if so, then that appears to be fine, there is no blown fuse in there. anything else that could be triggering it

I had similar problems recently and was a water logged ECU. It was dried out but wouldn't run properly so had to get a new one. Got it for £250 through the garage.

Hope the drying out over the weekend does the trick for you.

With the fan coming on. If the engine ecu is disconnected or foocked then the fan will come on constantly. Thats only with the ign on.
