Sorry for the vague title!

I have had a mk3 cupra before, now selling my 106 GTI and looking for another MK3 but i'm not sure as the ones i'm looking at aren't 'perfect' so possibly looking at a mk2!

What are they like in comparison to the mk3 cupra?

What luxuries do the have?

And what would a good one go for?

Whats the peformance like on a 16v one?

Thanks for any help.

Hey man.

I have a MK2 Gti spec and it has the following:

Air Con
Electric Windows
Electric Wing Mirrors
Power Steering
Adjustable steering column
MFA
Recaro Interior (This varies depending on the spec from the factory, Recaro tends to be quite rare, Cupra's have 1/2 Leather interior)

I can't comment on the comparison with the MK3 as I have never driven one.

Mileage on these can be anywhere from 50K to well over 100k.

GTi's are more common than the Cupra spec

16v has 150bhp standard rating. The power is mostly top end so you have to rev quite hight to get the full benefits.. however this makes it sound very raspy which is great!

Watch out for rust on the rear arches, this is a common problem!

I hope that is of some help!

personally i'd go for a mk3 turbo if the money's there, as our dear old mk2's are getting old, but if you can pick one up with low milage, it will be well worth it. the 16 valve is a nice engine, has to be worked harder than the 8v, but has more power at higher rev's, the 8 valve is easier to drive in a sense that you get power nice and early, but there both great cars, the cupra sport versions have no sun roof or air con, the gti 16 valve has both those 'luxuries' insurance groups are as follows: gti cupra sport 8v- 11, gti 16valve cupra sport- 14, gti 16valve - 10. interior is far better on 16 valve, has half leather seats, and cupra sport written on gear knob, seats etc, 8 valve has gti written on seats, but there just cloth, no leather! have fun choosing mate.... :D oh yeah and 8 valve is 115 bhp, but nearly all of them are actually 120-125bhp, from rr days etc thats the genaral power! can't complain!

I like both the mk3 + 2 but was wondering if i'd get a really good mk2 where as i won't get a great mk3, i think i might hold back, keep using my run around and save for a nicer mk3, Just an idea about the mk2 though, will think about it and do more research once i'm home!

I went from a 2001 106 GTI to a 1999 Ibiza Cupra Sport 8v and in driving and performance terms it was a big step down. Obviously the 106 was quicker than the 8v but the handling and brakes were in a different league as well, both cars were standard by the way. I have since driven a 2.0 16v Cordoba and still think the 106 was the better drivers car, but in terms of reliability the Seat wins.
I now have a remapped Ibiza Cupra (Mk3) and even though it is quicker than the 106 in a straight line (not by much though up to 3 figures) the Pug would still have an advatage in the corners.
As for the toys on the Ibiza If you get a GTI Cupra Sport 16v you will get all the same toys near enough as the 106 e.g. no aircon. As already stated above if you get an earlier GTI 16v not a Cupra you will get aircon.

WEll i have a modified 106 GTI (4-2-1 mani, cat-back, induction kit + spax suspension) i thought the 16v ibiza may still be slower tbf, i had a remapped mk3 and i can confirm it would of left the 106, i played with my mates tuned 16v quicksilver and my ibiza was leaving him.

But i want some luxury again, for a fwd hot hatch i doubt you'll get a better drivers car (except ek9). Think i'll wait, save and get a better mk3 if i can save at a quick enough rate.

i went from a mk2 16v to a mk3 20vt back to a cordy 16v and then into another mk2 16v now mk3 20vt powered

in standard form the 2.0 16v and 1.8 20vt are almost equally powered but if your looking at performance mods the 20vt is always going to be the cheaper to increase power on

both are great cars but the mk2 still does it for me
