I'm in the market for a portable satnav (leaning towards Garmin Nuvi 310D) but would rather not have one stuck on my windscreen all the time.

I wondered if anyone has done a simple install in the space infront of the gearstick or anything?

So do you have to have the internet on your fone, switched on constantly when using the nav system, looks pretty basic but if it works and you get internet access free on your fone them its a bargin, does it actually work well then, also if you have it in your car will you get £60 fine and 3 points if you have it dash mounted and switched on?

internet is for downloading routes as required (35kb normally)

navigation is done from the gps reciever

works fine but is basic to use and look at

as for mounting on dash i guess it falls under the same rules as a tom tom does - can you get a fine for dash mounting a phone if its not in a call ?

True, sorry if this seems abit of a simplton question buts what exactly is the gps reciever, do you need to buy one of these or is it something that is downloaded on your fone?

its a gps receiver, a aerial sort of, basically receives signals from satellites to calculate your position

most sat nav cars have them built in to the radio antenna (blob at the bottom) but aftermarket ones can be USB or Bluetooth thus enabling like me to use a laptop or phone for satellite navigation

my phone one is recharegable and bluetooth so i simply start it up and check for satellites and stick phone and box in my pockets and ride off [B)]

here's mine but put bluetooth gps in google or ebay and you'll see thousands

With regards to the Garmin,i've just bought a Nuvi 250 and its GREAT! the 310D should be even better.
All you need to think about is the power cable for it and security (sad i know but true) not sure which would be the best way to mount it though but now i've got one i don't think i could live without one there that good.

Ah rite cheers so whats the one you have downloaded for your laptop then?

Mapfactors PC navigator 6 - there is version 7 out now but that costs money

i managed to buy a mk1 inforad gps camera bleeper (tells you where safety cameras are via gps) which is basic as hell and cheap n nasty but for £20 i didnt care at the time but as the car power supply converts it to USB i did some research i realised i could also use it for gps tracking and promptly went hunting satnav for a pc - tried loads and settles on PC navigator as its interface is basic easy and simple just like a tom tom is, all the microsoft autoroute stuff was way too complex for in car

bonus is i have managed to acquire the speed camera database and imported it in anyway so no longer need the detector as the satnav software warns me as well

the inforad is crap but very useful in the wider scheme and half the price of a gps unit alone

does come with a years subscription free and £40 a year after but i get em for £20 so i'll bin it for a new one or use the bikes bluetooth i got one anyway
