Popping out of reverse (2.0 GTi)

Hi guys,

Just finished replacing the clutch on my Ibiza that I picked up a few weeks ago. It drives great through all the gears except reverse - I think it has had quite a hard life going by the previous owner but its a nice overall car that I got for a good price

I can reverse a few metres before it pops out of reverse (with quite a loud bang+crunch). The linkage appears fine, so I think this is an internal problem. If I reverse slowly, and let the clutch in and out, I can keep going which I could probably live with.

So, new gearbox time, or would it be worth trying to repair?

Its a shot syncro so new box unless your handy with a spanner.

Tried holding the lever in?

I'm handy with a spanner but I have never opened a gearbox. Its not a linkage problem unfortunately :-(

I should hopefully get a replacement box ok, just have to motivate myself to take the old one out again!

Just to help anyone in the future with the search, the reverse idler gear was badly worn, along with the gear it connects too (although not as bad)

I replaced the idler gear with a new one from Seat for 70, and gambled not replacing the other gear as it was 80 or 90 pound - now have reverse!

Before people say you could have got a second hand one for cheaper, I did that and its reverse gear was knackered as well, so we decided to make a good box for a bit extra.

just to add my experience with this issue on my old 1.4, i had to have a new gearbox as the old one went so got a replacement whcih was the same model off a vw i beleive but the ratios were not the same

anyway after having it reverse gear kept doing the same thing as yours did, however Kitfox on here who has it no longer has issues with reverse gear popping out now. think it had not been used for a long time but all is good now apparently

Would that have been the linkage then?
