POP,CHUFF, One Dead Turbo

Was larging it down the motorway at the weekend when the turbo went pop, big chuff of white smoke! Pulled the downpipe off today to take a look and its broken the shaft.
Its done 55k and i've only had it 3 weeks, luckily its under warranty so it back to the dealer tomorrow.

What caused it to snap the shaft? is it going to be happening very often?

This tdi could turn into an expensive hobby lol

Hazard a guess at 55k of thrashed from cold, maybe lack of oil changes and possiblya blocked oil line = premature turbo failure. That said i have given mine death and it started to show the signs of failure at 50k and it's not been cold thrashed and has had regular oil and filter changes.

Very faint police siren sound - told journal bearings on their way out. It also felt a little 'flat' of late in the higher gears so rather than wait for it to go pop ... it was taken off and changed.

Mine gives a squeel (like squeeling brakes) from about 2500-3000 rpm... think that could be the turbo? I cant find any boost leaks.

Disco Biscuit, get SEAT (or the garage) to give you a rough guesstimate for how much it would have cost if you had not been in warranty and let me know.

About 700/900 quid maybe more + fitting + vat - makes perfect sense to go hybrid. I would be concerned if it's squealing, it definitely shouldn't be - have you had the pipes off and had a visual inspection of play / clearances?

I assumed Turbo Dynamics (are they the only ones no allards no longer do road cars?) would uprate the turbo I sent them to stage 2??? But if my turbo is on its way out, is this possible, or wise??

I spoke to them a while back, and it was £1125+vat for a new stage two turbo :O

With a custom remap I'd be looking at £~1700 eeeek.

Do those figures sound about right? Plus where do I look to check the turbo... I have no idea how to get to the turbo and look, but im off tomorrow, so I can give it a day

I think if you ring Td ... depending how bad yours is, it's about 595 for the rework on your turbo + fitting + mapping. I think ptorque are talking circa 1100/1200 all in including sending your turbo off to get reworked.

To check the turbo youd need to be under the car, undertray off and turbo inlet /outlet hose off - easy for people that know what they're doing which isn't me

mmmmmmmmm, I think I may drop into AMD tomorrow, and let them have a quick look.

Ive heard alot of good things about ptorque... looks like the Revo badge may have to come off the back of the car

Mine sounded fine, can't see it being a maintenance issue it has full SEAT service history.
Euro car parts quoted me £560+ vat for a new one, £420 + vat for a recon,

If i was having to pay i'd be going hybrid but i think that turbo dynamics price is to modify a working turbo not a broken one.

I've been running Revo since i got it, maybe it helped it die a permature death, lol

Got the day off today, so it will be sorted one way or another today

1st thing is getting Amd to see if it's the turbo.

I've searched for "maz" to no avail

For about £560 you can get a hybrid (based on the standard turbo but with the compressor wheel and housing from the 2.5tdi) from Turbo Technics. I have this fitted to mine and she is making over 350 lbft at 146000 miles. A map from Jabba will be approx £450 and expect to pay about £200/250 for turbo fitting with an oil change.
The tt unit is an exchange basis.

and yes mine is the stage 2 turbo dynamics hybrid 150tdi turbo

Amd have taken it out and say the turbo sounds very "airy". So it maybe a boost leak... But they're still checking it.

I'd want no less than 235bhp if I went big turbo, so that's either jabba or p-torque doing the mapping. Hopefully if my turbo is on it's way out, it's still in good nick.

Turns out my turbo is top notch. I have a boost leak on the exit of the turbo on the pipe leading to the pancake bit (the usual place).

Getting a replacement pipe, till a more suitable alternative can be found...

Thats good news, AMD told me they could map a hybrid to 250 bhp but its a bit of a smokey map.

Interesting that mine did exactly the same at 56000 miles !!!! shaft snapped too.

Had about a week of noisy bearing (as some have mentioned) then snap.

total cost to get an oem one was £1200 total (turbo, oil/filter change, oil feed pipe, fitting).

And likewise I dont rag from cold and all services done on time and at dealers !!!
