Hey all, firstly sorry if i come accross as a typical newbie but i really need some help.
my brother in law drives a seat leon s 1.4 xreg. now the problem is, it cuts out when the revs drop back down after driving. i will try and explain a little better. i went out in it today to test drive it to see what was wrong, first thing i noticed was the temp gauge had a red flashing light and beeping even when it was up to temp or when it was cold. i dont know if this has anything to do with it but thought id better mention it anyway.
ok scenario:
get in the car, start it, cuts out immediately. in order to start it you must press the gas pedal when cranking over otherwise it starts and then dies. when its started it seems fine, idles ok and no noticeable faults. however when you start to drive down the road, say 30mph, then slow down to turn, as soon as you come off the gas pedal and the revs drop down to apprx 1000 it dies unless you quickly blip the throttle then it will saty on idle. it does this everytime the revs drop back down to idle. whether it be in neutral, 0mph, 70mph, in gear, clutch down etc basically any situation if the revs drop to idle it will die. i thought it could possibly be the idle speed control valve, however if and when it does idle, it idles fine not erraticaly.

sorry for the long essay, i hope all of this makes sense and i hope someone will know exactly what i mean. i decided to come to this forum as my previous experience with forums are great, imo the best place for advice on this topic has got to be a load of seat enthusiasts.
i would really appreciate it if someone could help, many many thanks
Dean

if its the same 1.4 engine as is in my ibiza (bby engine), which i think it is, mine did almost exactly the same thing when the egr valve gave up would start, idle, cut out at junctions then it would allow me to bump start it until the next junction where it would do the same.
i'm told these valves are notorious for going wrong, mine has twice, you have to get the part from the dealers and mine cost about 125 quid also get them to fit it or someone with a computer that works with your car, because they need to map it to the ecu, or thats what they said anyway, cost me about 185 quid in all.

It does sound very Idle Control Valve related to me. Ironically, it doesn't actually control the idle speed, it just 'catches' the revs when the throttle is closed to stop it just dying - it bypasses the throttle body to let a little more air in, thus the engine puts a little more fuel in to stop the engine dying. Its just like you brushing the throttle very gently (which is what you are doing to compensate). Once at idle the valve is closed and redundant.

I can't see how it would be connected to the flashing temp light, sounds like a different problem altogether (coolant tank sensor/sender problem maybe?)
