I noticed a slight background knocking noise I haven't heard before, start on my AROSA 1.4 TDI yesterday and after a 90 mile commute the knocking has got really loud and you can feel it vibrating through the car now.

At first I noticed no change in the way the car drived atall but after a few miles it just got progressively worse and when I got home last night it was slow and sluggish and un responsive. The sound is like a booming/knocking sound that has got louder and seems to be coming from the drivers side under the airbox.... that sort of area! I'm not too clued up on diesel engines so if there's any derv doctors out there that can help I'd appreciate it!

Thanks

If its a knocking noise I would be worried.
If its a booming noise the I suspect that a pipe has come off somewhere after the air mass meter hence the poor performance?

exhaust knocking
CV joint
Suspension bushes

its hard to assume something unless you are more specific with the details

When does it knock - a regular pattern, does it change with revs, or does it knock under acceleration, braking, steering ?

That would give some clues.

The knocking/booming is definately coming from the engine and started off quiet and has got loader gradually over the 90 mile commute home. it knocks all the time and is proprtionate to the engine revolutions.

so as for it being in time with the revs, are we talking 1000 knocks at 1000rpm is it less regular? does it happen when your moving or at idle as well?

i used to have a mk4 golf 150 tdi and that started knocking, dont know if its the same problem as mine but it ended up with a new head, i didnt help myself in any way because run mine for a while because after a few minutes it would stop and i kept putting it off. i got told that the injecters in them are rubbish and prone to failing and that caused my problem. take it to a well known garage asap. hope its not that severe

I wouldn't say there was 1000 knocks at 1000rpm but it does go up as you increase the revs. I've tried Vag com and I have no fault codes come up.

My initial thoughts are timing belt slip or manifold! Its booked into my mates garage tomorrow hopefully he'll sort it I'll let you know the outcome!

Well just got as call from my mate and its bad news! The camshaft has chewed through the follower and now into the valve on one of the cylinders so needs all replacing including cam belt again looking at £1000 all in!!!!!!! Anyone know any cheap second hand engines for sale? :(

What mileage was the engine on ?

Has it been properly services - always with the correct PD-spec oil ? (I presume it's a PD engine?)

Either there was a defect with the follower- or it hasn't been serviced regularly and/or with the right oil.

No early signs apart from the knocking. The cambelt tensioner has ceased but the belt hasn't slipped and timing is still spot on! (Belt was new 25k miles ago).
I've changed the oil every 10k miles with vw505 01 spec oil but my mechanic friend reckons this may be the problem as it is a fully synthetic oil and now not suitable for the high milage it has done (105k). Onther thanthat there is no other indication as to why this has happened! The cam is touching the valve and my mate reckons I'm lucky it aint gone any further he won't even risk ticking it over anymore! Camshaft is over £200 (genuine part)! Gutted! Made the decision to get it done so will have to wait and see how much its all gonna cost! Xmas is cancelled! :(

Will do! Gonna be a few days tho! Just reading Deebo's thread and was quite interesting! Gonna check the SEAT Service History now to see what oil they used!

Glad my thread was of some use to you. I did post it on here sometime ago but was shot down saying I must have miss-treated the car. Was only trying to warn people of a potential problem that could effect PD engines! Since then several PD owners on UK-MKIVs have had the same problems. VW have contributed to repairs in some cases.

Good luck with the repairs.

So I see in the thread! Well I haven't miss treated the car atall! It's never missed an oil change! Problem is I can't tell what oil was used before I bought it as I'm the 2nd owner but it had a full SSH! Just hope it doesn't do it again! Do you still use vw 505 01 5w/30 in your motor? How many miles it done now?
cheers for your help!
