Hi All...

So.. picked up my cupra today...

Happy overall, nice car to drive, darty, not as much fun on roundabouts as my mk1 Golf GTi (which is just great for lift off oversteer).. but to be fair I havent really given it a proper thrashing on the corners yet.

Have however floored it on a long straight... fairly quick up to 80mph but not really pulling much above that... and none of the tourqe steer / wheel spinning I was expecting (even with the traction control off).

Am I expecting too much or are they really not that quick before chipping?

Fitting a boost gauge as soon as it arrives (should be monday)... so I will see if it is boosting right (9psi standard? its not chipped) also waiting on a Ebay VAG COM Cable... which will probably reveal all sorts of nasties.

No engine check lights on the dash (nothing at all lit up).

I can hear chatter / turbo stall (standard airbox so not loud)... so I'm guessing the standard recirc has gone (and I'm not suprised they do being sat right above a blazing hot turbo)... could this be the cause of the rather dissapointing performance?

I have a almost brand new Forge 006 recirc from my old Punto GT.. I notice everyone uses 007 but as mine is essentially the same thing I guess it will be ok???

It's got a horrid momo gear knob on it.. which is going as soon as my brand new standard one turns up... I assume you can refit the standard one (only asking as I just saw a post that mentioned having to brake something to get the original one off).

Cheers guys, any help with the above would be great!!

Adam.

I think I will also...

Check the throttle switch as highlighted by a welsh chap on here...

Do a TB re allignment (battery off for 20 mins, reconnect, turn ignition on but dont start car, wait 20 mins... is that right???).

Cheers,

Adam.

check it on VAG com as you say, mine when standard pulled to 120 without hesitation

check for any loose pipes or splits as it may sound like you are losing boost - the boost gauge will tell you this, you should be boosting about 7-9psi standard

also get it in for a dam good service, oil change, spark plugs, you would be amazed what a faulty or worn set of plugs can do and they do affect performance

also in the service they will supply a new air filter, i suggest getting an uprated one or even better go to www.badger5.co.uk and buy a dynatwist and you will get that, god help me for saying this ...."wooshy" sound

get all of this done and then see how it goes

also if you car is struggling over 80mph, VAG com will show up some faults....i suspect a fault MAF

good luck and let me know how it goes, hope this has helped

If the dump valve is making a chatter sound and its the standard one, its more than likely going to be a faulty dump valve as they are pretty commen for failing, which will be loosing boost, alot more at top end which is why its slower after 80mph.

I have a 006 dv fitted to my Cupra with no problems. Just watch the clearance between the aircon pipes.

Yeh it'll be quick but nothing special standard, if you have a Mk1 GTI you'll probs have more fun in that at the moment! But it should pull over 80mph easily, the MAF may be due a change.

Cool...

So, had to go and err, get some fuel... new car and all that...

Think I discovered where I was going wrong... Filled up with Super unleaded (no optimax in this area for 40 miles) the dealer filled her up before, and I doubt he put decent fuel in, turned the traction control off... and went for it...

It's raining here and damn cold so the air is nice... now she flys to a ton... and pretty steady to 120.. (all testng done on my own private race track of course)... so feeling a bit better about it...

Also... this fly by wire malarky is wierd, feels very different to regular cable throttle, still feel in control but disconnected.. strange.. I'm sure I will get used to it... another factor in my first impressions perhaps.

Don't like the traction control, think that might be off more than on with me.

Now the bloomin alarms going off... so far I will put this down to wind... but it better not keep me up!

Was suposedly serviced by the dealer... I expect it was just an oil change tho... if I'm lucky that is... will get on and do a proper service shortly... just gunna go for a panel filter (K&N / Green) and smooth the air box... wanna keep the engine looking totally stock.

Think I will go for the 60,000 mile service soon too... I know it's only done 44K but for the age of it the belt should have been done by now (oct 2000)... so I think I will.. water pump too.

Did I read on here that the clutch switch allows full throttle gear shifts? (Havent tried, just wondered).

Cheers for your help people!

just to finish...

Vag-Com'd and it came up with a map sensor fault... looked under the bonnet and found that it was unplugged!!

Plugged it in... she's a rocket now!

Wicked... well chuffed... just hope I can keep up with the thirsty fuel consumption.

Thanks... Forums (this one and a few others I frequent) contain a fantastic amount of knowledge and usefull information... I try to use them as such... some people seam to think they are like MSN...

The search button is my favorite button on any forum... already learnt so much about the Cupra.. and it's common faults (which I thought to be not too bad.. far better the pug 306 hdis anyway!).

Thanks for all the help people... great site... I'm sure it will be invaluable in my Ibiza ownership!!

Treated her to a full valae & polish today... looks sooo shiney!! :)

If you are smoothing the airbox take a look at this:

I would put pictures up but I haven't taken any yet.. and... it just looks like a clean black cupra really... nothing goin on.. all bone stock.

Looking forward to getting the boost guage hooked up... a turbo car with no boost gauge.. its just not right.

Also...since pluggin the map sensor in I'm getting slightly better fuel consumption... about 260 to a tank (£37 to fill up with super)... not tooo bad..well worth it for the grin factor.

Suprised the map sensor not being plugged in didn't throw up a CEL.. is that normal?? mine never comes on (is it ment to come on when starting up?).

Cheers for you help guys.
