I have exactly the same problem in my 16V - never got to the bottom of it...
Seems worse when the weather's colder - particularly winter mornings.
Have examined hoses from petrol pump (under rear passenger seat - driver's side) but couldn't find anything obvious. Also have had petrol filler pipe off and reconnected, thought that might have solved it - but it's been back for the last week or so...
Dunno why I think it's coming from the back of the car either...
i think my leak is more in the bonnet area, i have checked around the hoses and there doesnt seem to be any petrol leaking from there.
need to look when its dry really
Yeah, I had this last year - one of the fuel lines had a small split in it. As you say, a strong smell of petrol in the car. In the end took it to a garage to sort out as decided that although I couldn't spot anything, a split fuel line under the bonnet is a massive risk - and worth sorting sooner rather than later before you go up in flames.
