Petrol engine sounds like a diesel

Hi
I am in the process of buying a Seat ibiza and went to see one today. It was a 1.2l, 2003 with 79,000 on the clock. What I found unusual is that it sounded like a diesel from inside the car. Not the knocking type of an old diesel more like a modern diesel. From the outside it sounds fine and revs without any unusual sounds, it only when inside the car it sounds like a diesel. Is this how Seats sound from the inside ??

The 1.2 is a 3 cylinder engine with a timing chain so does sound a little different to other petrol Ibizas. If the engine was cold, it will probably sound worse too.

HI
thanks for the reply. The clutch also makes a noise when changing gear. It sounds like there is something loose. It only happened when releasing clutch during a change of gear. When engaged there were no other noises. Also when does the timming belt have to be changed?

DON'T buy it then, buy one with a proper engine with 4 cylinders.

The 1.2 has a timing chain, the chain tensioners are a weak point and the chain can jump causing thousands of £ damage.

Get a 1.4 or a diesel, the diesels are very good so I'm told. the 1.8 turbo 20 valve is better though heehee.

theres no way the car should sound like that, mines virtually silent when running. inside and out. mines around the same milage

i personally dont think theres anything wrong with the 1.2 apart from being underpowered. only thing i dont like about mine

1.9 PD130/160 engines or the 1.8 20VT engines are both awesome tbh ;)

Hi
As the clutch pedal is released after changing gear the was a short low level ring noise. It didn't happen all the time, but the noise wasn't there when changing down, only on changing up.
When I was driving it it was surprisingly nippy and responsive for a 1.2.

I had a 1.2 12v Fabia (same engine) as a Hire Car once, I loved the sound of it especially when you revved it, it sounded like a V6. It was very nippy around town and I got about 40mpg from it.

But compared to my vRS out of town it was very underpowered, when you put your foot down it just made a noise and didn't do much, although TBH I preferred that sound compared to mine.

i had a 1.2 3 pot polo 9n for a while, and it too sounded like a diesel when you first start it, in fact my 1.4 sounds like a diesel on the initial ignition. from what i remember the 3 pot does sound different, buzzier sorta sound, not sure if that's because of the chain cam, bit like the 1.2 Corsas too. The polo was a nice car though bit underpower because of the polo's body.

As with the clutch, i'm not liking from what you describe, avoid if you havent bought it yet.
