pesky brakes

now am i being really really dumb or is there a specific way of pressing back the piston in the calipers when changing over brakes.........

my brakes will not budge a single mm even with handheld sledgehammer and wood beating the crap out of it.........

this happened for all 4 calipers so im hoping theres something else to wind the piston back else my brakes are severly fecked (they dont look healthy at all i must say)

any suggestions before i just put it in garage?

Hi, not positive about the front ones but the back ones wind in, they are threaded, you need a special tool to wind them in, Halfords do the tool for about £15. I just put mine into the garage, it was less hassle. Good luck

I've only ever changed the fronts myself, but use a G clamp which fitsover the old pad/backing plate and the back of the calliper and they go back in no problem.

Over there
Had to use a G clamp when I did my fronts. They were strong but not that hard to get back in.

I know the rears definately are threaded and you need a caliper winding tool to get them wound back in.

what tool for the back fellas? looks like it actually needs spun back into the caliper with a rather funky device

fronts are done.......drivers side was sticking but its freed up now :)

a hell of a LOT easier if you take the cap of the fluid res.the LASER windback tool comes with the lugs that fit the rear recess(in a fashion, just take it steady).

yeah my tool to press the calipers back didnt budge the rears at all (its just a flat sheet of metal that sits flush)

they look like they need spun as opposed to pressed back?

couldnt the laser tool in local shop - ive just got a draper one

ask for a VAG adapters, another few quid, but has close lugs on on one and wider ones on the other(laser again)they might not fit your tool though, give me a bit i'll dig mine out and take a snap to show you what i mean

if you've been hitting it with a hammer, you may well have dented the inside of the calliper. have 10 house points.

you squash back squarely with the proper tool, even G-clamps are a bodge.

remove the piston, inspect, replace seals (buy these 1st) and rebuild. it's a sod of a job since the seals are TIGHT

as I said before IIRC the rears need wound back in. You need a special tool to wind them in. Not sure what it is called but it looks like a lego block of sorts. its square with different prongs on each side. You put that on the calliper and twist it with a big ratchet. Bugger of a job to do, I got my local garage to do mine. good luck

as you can see the laser one comes with lugs already, flip it over and the lugs are different sizes, the adapter on the right is the "audi" adapter, its not needed with the laser tool(i found to my expense),even turning gently with a set of mole grips gives better results than tw4tting it,though will knarl your piston a bit, unless you are V.careful.note missing plate to press against caliper
