PD150 Oil Change. How to?

Hi folks!

Seat want £115 inc vat for an oil change.

Is there a how to anywhere?

I've done oil changes in the past, but have heard a few horror stories about stripped thread on these sumps...

Am I best going to a specialist? (AMD are close to me...)

If I do end up doing it, will I need axle stands? Can it be done by jacking up and removing a wheel?

There was a link with pics in one of the posts on here. I think it was doing an oil change on an Ibiza, but its the same principle.

Last oil change I parked one side of my car on the kerb and jacked the other side up at the front (can't use ramps as my car is to low)

The screws that hold the plastic sump cover on underneath the car require a six sided tool (don't know what this is called or the size but their fairly common) so make sure you have that before you start. I used a normal oil filter chain over a rag to open the oil filter cap (Be gentle as its plastic)

Make sure you use the correct oil, tdi 150 is 506.01 5w 40 from memory and you will need about 4 1/2 litres

It's based on a Passat PD130, but just rotate the engine by 90º clockwise and it's pretty much identical...

Did mine on Sunday just a quick one took about an hour (usually leave for an hour or two to drain more)

Tools would be
oil filter strap thing
my sump nut is 19mm
six hex screw mentioned above (come with most multi screw driver sets)
oil catch can (stupid wind blow most of the oil on my drive ffs)
funnel for putting oil back in.
new oil filter
new oil (4.5l?)


(you could put some oil cleaning stuff in)
1 - remove dip stick and oil lid.
2 - line up catch can remove sump nut(when removing nut remember the pressure will shoot the oil out about 8 inches)
3 - remove oil filter housing lid(with strap thing) remove old and replace
does the 150 need a bit of oil in here to stop it running dry the first time you turn her over?
4 - put sump nut back in (I just do it tight not very tight)
5 - put 3.5L of oil in and leave
6 - check and add more as needed.

feel free to rip it to bits anyone

I've researched a lot about those pela pumps however i'm not 100% they remove all "bits" from the sump.

Going by that passat oil filter change it looks like the new filter does not need "oiling" when changing

this should be "fun"

If there's anything left it'll only be in the order of teaspoons in quantity - there'll be more than that left standing in other bits of your engine that won't come out whether you suck or drain....

Compared to the 4-4.5 litres of fresh oil it's nothing.

It saves so much hassle of getting underneath your engine, having to remove undertrays, and having oil piss everywhere.

but also if you did have large amounts crap in your oil/sump this would be very bad? and show that a bigger problem is occuring in your engine?

Like the Magnetic sump nuts they would be good for one or two oil changes at the start of the engines life? but then it would be usless as the engine shouldn't be doing any shaving or losing metal bits off anything?

Someone body please correct me!

Don't fancy shedding out £50 on one myself....... and seeing as the warranty on the Altea runs out in May, I'll be DIYing my oil changes from then on

Yeah, T25 IIRC for the smaller ones down the sides/back, and T30 for the 3 or 4 larger ones at the front.... don't quote me on that though
