Hi all

I just wanted to see you all think on getting part worn tyres, I need 3 tyres and was thinking that getting decent brand part warn, would be better than cheap new tyres.

looking at 225/45/17

Any thoughts

The problem with part worns is you don't know the history - have they spent their life being overheated on a track? damaged carcass, puncture repaired etc

Better off just picking up "good" new tyres

I dont really understand when people say You don't know the history etc.. When you buy a second hand car do you change all the tyres as in effect they are part worn

You can normally tell if a 2nd hand car has been crashed or lived on a track though...

That said, yes I do.

tyres on a used car would be inspected by the buyer and if they were lumpy tyres you would feel them on road test and that would effect if you bought the car or not.

for all you know the part worn tyres you buy could have flatspots which wouldnt be very nice to drive on for 5000 miles if they last that long.

I think I will go for new tyres, need 2 for the rear really, I've had a phone round and been quoted below all in

Goodyear £102
Hankook £94
Uniroyal £102
Budget from £65

I guess part worn will be cheaper but wont last as long,

The only time I would consider part worn is if they were winter tyres. At least in that case they're unlikely to have gone on a track, or driven hard, and physical damage is more likely to be 10mph kerbing rather than anything more serious. And the nature of winter tyres means that there is a reason they would be taken off before they wore out.

I agree with Camskill or even the more mainstream ones like Blackcircles, 225/45/17 is a very common tyre size and there is loads of choice. As long as you stay away from the absolute bottom of the range, you should get yourself a decent tyre.
