Here's my story today - been out in the car and turned the air con on for the first time since owning the car. Everything fine and returned home with no problems. A few hours later i go out to the car and find the battery is flat and have to jump start the car. I use the car to go the our local shops with the wife and i'm a bit reluctant to turn it off so soon after jump starting it so i sit in the car with it ticking over while she goes into the shops.
Then i notice the temperature rising and don't hear the fans kick in, the temp got up to almost the red with no sign of the fans so i decided to drive around to cool the car down rather than turn it off and it not start again.
I get home home and find a thread regarding melting fuses above the battery so i check my fuses on the battery to find the left hand side one a bit melted but nothing to bad, the middle one and the right one are both fine.
does anyone know if this fuses could be anything to do with the fans not kicking in or me turning the air con on??

Sounds like a coolant fan switch fault. Any management lights on, if so get it VAG com'ed that'll give you a better idea.

If you have a power probe you could test the fans to se if they were working and work back from there eg wiring fuses or relays....

got up this morning and the car started, went out for a short run and returned home. Needed to go back out and the battery was flat again so i've bought a new battery to see if it just wasn't holding any charge - time will tell i guess.
I initially went to Halfrauds for a battery and they were charging £99.99 for one . . £99.99 [:@] can you believe that, the robbing b@stards. So went to a local car shop instead, £50 and fitted in half an hour :)

If you still have problems then check the earths to the starter and engine block and tight and in good condition. If not then they can lead to irregular starting and poor charging of the battery.....;)

cheers mate, will do.
i'm gonna get my local specialst to check it tomorrow to make sure it's charging ok and to suggest any possible solutions to the fans not kicking in.
Had another problem today with the petrol flap solonoid :( - it wasn't letting the flap close but i've sorted it by taking it off and coating the 'push rod' with WD40 and it seems ok now

Mine has reached the age where a squirt of lube on most hinges and exposed parts seems to be necessary at the moment...

It looks like mine is heading that way too, i haven't had it long but there are loads of niggly little things that i'm working my way through - changed the cup holder yesterday, the memory on the electric seat doesn't want to work and the same seat has a 'creak' when cornering :(

If you say the fuse is a bit melted then I would get that sorted asap. Mine went and rather than get a new fuse box I had the fan fuse rerouted. If your engine is overheating that could cause all sorts of other problems so you need those fans working. I wouldn't be driving without them because what if you get held up in traffic on a warm day? Oh and if you've had the battery disconnected or changed you need to reset the memory seats.

The fuse that did have sign of being melted was the left one though (looking at them from the front of the car) and everything i've read indicates it's the right hand side one that operates the fans.I will be getting the fuse holder sorted anyway.

I'm pretty sure it is the left hand one on the Toledo (from memory). It could be that most of the pictures and comments are in the Ibiza fan fuse poll thread that you've seen. I might be wrong but perhaps the fuse boxes are set the other way round? Either way it's the very end one.

Ah, found a pic I took with the hole where the burnt out fuse was and where it was rerouted:

Good luck

yep, definately the left one then although mine doesn't look at bad as yours. To be honest, i couldn't tell it had melted until i pulled it out to check them and one of the contacts on the fuse was covered in black melted plastic, the other 2 fuses were fine.
What's involved in rerouting it?

It's not something I did myself. The local garage did it. They literally just wired a separate fuse in to the little black holder you see between the red wires in the pic. It has been fine ever since (2 years maybe?). I wondered if it might actually be a bit more protected from the engine heat the way it sits now.
