hello everyone out there new member here with a problematic diesel.
2004 ibiza cupa 30k miles. when accelerate in 3/4/5/6 from 2500 revs the revs surge to 4000 then fall back. the car still pulls properly! thought it was a slipping clutch but did a steep hill start in 3rd fine without any slip. have put in fuel cleaner as VERY smoky.
Any ideas???
had the beast for 2 years and love it very fast and economical. My wife and kids hate the ride though too firm for a passenger.

Since a diesel engine has no throttle and requires the input of fuel to rev, then it would seem that you have a fuelling issue. Confirmed by the presence of excess smoke. Could be a few things responsible for this but its likely only vagcom will confirm it. I have an issue with mine in as much as when I rev it, say up to 4/4500 rpm(stationary car) the engine hangs onto the revs for what seems like a ridiculous time. Mine has started smoking lots recently under hard acceleration, maybe a similar issue. Let us know how you go on.

I had a similar problem with mine, although I didn't get alot of smoke, but it depends on how much smoke your talking about, as these cars do blow out a fair bit sometimes when you put your foot down, this is perfectly normal, it's just a build up of soot, I spoke to my friend who it a mechanic at an Audi specialist who works on these type of engines all the time, he said it was something to do with the engine management system, I cant remember exactly, it's too technical for me, basically he told me to turn off the ESP, the button is on the centre bit by the right hand side of the hand break, then see if it still does it, if it doesn't then there is nothing to worry about, as he said the over reving is down to how the computer is controling the power to the wheels or ESP, it's a safety thing or something, anyway give it a go and see how you get on, mine is fine, even after switching the ESP back on, I think it resets itself or something!!

Mines is the same sumtimes sticky around the 2.5k then shoots up then settles but with esp off its fine as above really

thanks everyone as luck would have it just got back from Wales in wifes car. Nieces fella is a mechanic and suggested fuel cleaner which I have done. said it may be a clogged injector/misbalance of fuel inpit. HATE the M 25 2.5hrs swansea to hwathrow FIVE hrs heathrow to southend.

If the car is in gear when the revs are 'surging' to 4000 then i'm afraid its definitely your clutch thats slipping. The engine revs can't increase like that unless drive is broken in some way. It's clearly not wheelspin in such high gears so it must be the clutch.

bad news i'm afraid

i had this in my first cupra diesel, and as above is almost certainly the clutch i'm guessing it only does it when you put your foot all the way down in one go? ruined mine inside 9k miles and no they wouldn't pay up, changed clutch and learnt how to drive the diesel better (please do not read this as a dig at your driving i promise it is not) and squeeze the pedal as opposed to mash it like you could in a petrol. i now am on my second and (touch wood) after 25k miles my clutch is not slipping so either i am getting better or as my mates suggest the clutch is a different make!

if you can learn to drive around it then dont think it will do any damage but others may now better otherwise get yourself a sachs clutch and a remap! hope it goes well for you.

I had similar symptoms on my old (MY02) A3 TDi.. we changed the clutch (well it had done well over 100k) but to no avail..

It turned out to be a faulty clutch master cylinder.. worth a try and loads cheaper than a new clutch if it works!

cheers thought it had curred as was fine last night but doing it again in the wet weather. Will put up with it unless gets worse believe that it IS probably the clutch will have to wait til I can change it.
