Sorry for the boring post (arguing with my mate) would a standard fr petrol be quicker than a stage 1 diesal fr? (talking about away from lights not in gear!)

Im going with standard fr but im biased

i would guess the diesel, as when mapped is 170bhp or so which is more than the petrol. plus its only a second slower to 60 than the petrol standard anyway

i could be wrong though

It depends really on what speed you're going up to as the rev range is shorter on the TDIs so you'd have to change gear more often to get to the same speed.

Yeah, but as long as your not a wally changing gears, that wont really matter as the torque of the diesel will pull you as soon as you change gear

Well pulling away from a standstill it's going to be quite close as the Derv has more power bit is heavier than the petrol, you also can't put down 160bhp and 280ft/lb[1] of torque through the front wheels unless you have a LSD and road legal slicks until you are into 3rd but it's fun trying.

I don't think there will be much in the gear change area as the petrol may have a wider power band but the TDi has different gears compensating for it. (Or you could say the petrol has shorter gears to compensate for it's relative lack of torque)

Nah, thats rubbish. Puttong that power down and setting off fast is easy if u have good clutch and throttle control

No you arn't putting down anything like that much power, given the same tyres and geometory the petrol and TDi will be able to put down the same amount of power, it dosn't matter if the engine has 150bhp or 350bhp, if you actualy measure how much power you are using when you pull away from a standstill befor your tyres start to spin it won't be anywhere near the peak bhp or torque of the engine. Using the clutch and throttle to avoid spinning the wheels is simply proving my point as they are redusing the power going to the wheels.

Well as me and bunnin (when his was std & mine had just a phase 1 map) had a little go, and I was faster, not by a huge amount but faster none the less, at any speed, in any gear :D

Tho throw a remap on the petrol and that would make it a little more interesting :p

Until the petrol has a map, it imho it wouldnt keep up at all.

I remapped diesel can run the pod in around 15 seconds dead, can I standard petrol do that? Thats the real question....

Nothing or no one can ever say your car will be fine with a remap. Alot of people have remapped 1.8T's in 150/180/210 and 225 version with no problems, the guy pushing his 1.8T from a FR 150 form is Gaz Jones! His pulls like a diesel, crazy! He is running near on 240bhp at the moment.

I reckon a mapped 1.8T 150 should see around 6.5 depending on tyres maybe?

Ive had a remap on my PD130 since 8,000 miles and its been in for a few none engine problems and engine problems (nothing to do with the map I might add) and its always been fixed.
