Well i think its about time i sorted out the rediculous height of my standard suspension FR

What brand names are you all working with and what are the pros and cons you've came across on your travels?

What is the diameter of the front struts? is it 50mm or 55mm?

Anyone care to share their thoughts on the Coilovers offered by V - Maxx?

Thanks

The struts on the car are likely to be 55mm. Best thing to do is to call your dealer and ask for the part number (1T0 number is 55mm and 1K0 number is 50mm)
Also have you read this thread about Coilovers?
If you do for collies, I think a lot of the guys are sporting Eibach, AP or KWs. Guess its really up to you on what to go for.

Jonnyoplis had some KW V3's for sale for an FR not too long ago, I think he was asking £700 which is a bargain price.

Check the for sale section.

The diesel type would have a different spring rate to the petrol as the diesel is front heavy as far as I know.

at the end of the day unfortunately the KW's are a fair bit out of my price range...

what do they do that V - Maxx's wouldn't?

appreciate the input folks, keep it coming and anyone that cares to share their views, particularily on coilovers in the V - Maxx price bracket (approx £380) please do!

thats a bargain price? Can get brand new ones for 900 fitted

Only coilies I would go for are corrosion resistant ones seeing as the councils love to heavily grit the roads these days at the slightest sign of snow.

Do you really need the coilies though, could always just change the springs and dampers.

if you don't have enough money to get a good quality set of coilovers, then don't bother. cheap coilovers may seem good value but you'll regret it once thay start corroding. Stainless steel coilovers are the way forward or bilstein ones. I got kw v1 inox stainless steel coilovers as i didn't want grit eating into them.
at the end of the day, if your on a budget lowering springs are a great mod. As said above eibach lowering springs are highly recommended.

galvanised...? would that not offer any protection against corrosion?

bare in mind my car gets cared for like a baby... washed regularly, many hours at a time including in around wheel arches etc so any dirt and grit getting up in and around them is only going to be there for a week... two maximum!

Have you thought about just fitting Eibach sportline springs. They give a decent drop in height and retain some comfort, probably more comfort than the standard FR springs from what I've heard.

A few of people on here a have fitted spring to standard shocks. The springs are about £150 - http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=12841&xSec=1443

This is obviously the way to go for a fast drop at the fraction of the cost of a full Coilover Kit, however wont the Dampers eventually leak and perish - as they are being compressed say 30mm lower than their "factory" configuration?

Over on the Mk4 Ibiza sub forum, fitting lowering Springs while still running on standard shocks was discouraged, as your standard shocks will end up leaking and you have to spend more money to rectify in the not too distant future.....

Look forward to feedback, perhaps the FR Shocks are stronger and can take the punishment? :D

seek and ye shall find comes to mind here though... if you search hard enough for problems with something, no matter how highly priced/well made etc etc... then you are going to come across them soon enough.

priced them with a local place today and they are saying about £450 all in...

have you thought about the AP coilovers ? have great reviews and are good ride quality.

had a look online at the AP kit. very nice and in the same price range as the V-Maxx's.
Also come with the 2 tear warranty which is always handy.

Anyone on here using the AP coilovers and fancy giving your opinion about them?

Can anyone confirm the front strut diameter yet? 50mm or 55mm? is this easily measurable by myself?

cheers

Read my post above, just phone your dealer with your VIN and they should be able to confirm. The other way of doing it is to take off the wheel and see if you can read the label on the shock for the serial number.
