1.8tsi: My coolant goes up quickly to 90 and stays there.

Oil takes 10/15 mins to get up to 100C. Then bounces around 110C when pushing hard.

As said by others, my coolant never moves from 90C once engine is warm. Oil goes anywhere from 98-108C depending on usage and outside temps

There's a bit in the manual about oil temp. It says anything up to 120 is normal and as long as no warnings are on the dash it's fine.

My oil and coolant temps have been going a little funny recently. My coolant used to be rock solid at 90C and oil anywhere between 100-110C, but for the past few weeks oil has never gone above 80C and for the past couple of days the coolant has been struggling to reach 90C.

Nothing has changed in the car itself, no extra oil or coolant and I've had no dash warnings either. The car had a visual health check at the dealer about a month ago too and that was all fine.

Is this something to worry about? I've heard of cars over heating but never heard of a car struggling to gain temperature?

80 degrees is highly unlikely and too hot oil can be a problem (but quality oil can easily handle 140 degrees plus but so is too cold.
And cars with cheap unregulated oil coolers are prone to have problems during winter with oil not reaching the working temperature (and 80 probably is on de bottomline, possible unreliable sensor?)

How do you mean when you say 80 degrees is highly unlikely?

I was thinking that maybe it could be a faulty sensor, but oil temp has been consistently low for a long time, whereas coolant temp has only recently (over the past week) struggled to reach 90C.

I'd ring the dealer, but they're going to start thinking I'm sort of car hypochondriac or something and will just ask if I've had any warning/error messages - which I haven't.

you'd expect any car after running for 15 - 20 minutes to get up to more than 80, even normal to slow rural driving let alone in traffic.
i'd say there's something wrong with the thermostat or whatever they use today to keep coolant flowing. Used to be the coolant DIDN'T flow until the engine reached a normal temp, then it would open to allow circulation. No point in cooling an engine that isn't hot, after all. I don't know how modern engines work but that's still the principle - peak efficiency is when hot, not cold, so that's what they aim for.
Give the dealer a call - it's not right.

Yeah, I drove it for an hour yesterday and it was sat around 83-86, so I'm not saying it is dramatically off 90C, I just find it strange that for 9 months it hasn't budged from 90, and now it consistently does. This morning it was between 70-80 on a 25 min journey.

I think you're right, time to contact the dealer, again.

Spoke to the dealer who said it wasn't abnormal and to just keep an eye on it. Oil struggled to reach 70C on a 25 min journey this morning, will be interesting to see what happens when the temperature drops further.

There is definitely something wrong, mine hits temp 90 in a couple of miles and the oil hits 80 in the next mile or so. Then goes up to about 105 ish normal driving or 120 - 130 if I give a bit of stick. The car is now 6 weeks old and has been like this since I got it (barring the higher oil as I didn't give it much stick for the first 600M) I have never had a car that suddenly changed like yours, I would try another dealer for a second opinion.

I agree with you to be honest. Since I've had my car (nearly a year) coolant always sits at 90C once stabilised and oil fluctuates between 95-110C. But for the past few weeks, oil has been struggling to hit 90C and now for the past week coolant struggles to hit 90C, so something has definitely changed, I just have no idea what.

Might have to try a different dealer. It is due a service fairly soon, so that my help.
