Oil light came on last night - 12 month old LCR.

Booked in for a 12mth service on Monday but I need the car in the mean time.

Is it safe to drive until then? (50miles max).

I was always lead to believe that if the light came on you were already doing damage as it is a low pressure warning, not a low level warning. With my last car the warning light flickered briefly and then 20 seconds the engine seized, checked the dip stick to find it clean! The garage said they drained 2 litres of oil, it should have had 4.5 litres!

Yup - do not drive it until you have checked it.

if it's low, and you need to drive it - you'll understand the importance of your weekly checks from now on all the more.

Weekly what? :D

Nope, never ever checked it. Jeez - feel like a right woman now!:D

What oil should be used? I have no freekin idea. I presume it has running in oil at the mo - it is ok to mix with a different type? Ihink i've got a 3 yr old half bottle of mobil summit in the garage left in the boot of my old Cupra after a service. thats it.

On the off-chance, anyone know where will sell oil within walking distance of reading town center :D :D

Ahh yes - in the mall. Cheers dude.

So what type do i need? Anyone?

Don't have to flush the existing oil first do I?

Has it ever had an oil change or is it going in for its first service?

I'd call the dealers and ask them what oil is in it and what you should top it up with. You've covered your back then.

It will tell you in the handbook, is it in your car? I always use fully synth. There is a WV spec it needs to meet, VW500 or VW501 I think.

As a reference my LCR needs a top up every 5000 or so miles.

Its oil pressure though, not oil level.

I wouldnt drive it at all.

Low oil would not cause a low pressure!

Perhaps, check your level, reset your battery to get rid of the light! Start up and if the light comes back on straight away, do not drive! If it stays off it may just be a faulty sensor!.

Nothing to do with oil level though

Surely if it was very low you wouldn't have enough to pump around and maintain pressure?

Low oil level would cause the low pressure alert but it is not the only thing that could cause it.

True, but you'd have to lose a hell of a lot of oil for it to do so, about 3 litres or so!

If he's lost that much then there's a serious problem anyway.

Ian, what is your oil level reading like?

Right just checked the manual and it all depends on what colour the light flashed. It also flashes for insufficient level.

If the light flashes red or lights up red constantly then it is insufficient oil pressure! Did you hear any audible beeps?

1st action is to check oil level, if thats fine do not even idle the car further, you will damage your engine!

If it lights up yellow then its oil level.

Simple, and you could have diagnosed that yourself if you had bothered to read the manual

The other day the oil light (by which I mean the LED in the oil temp guage) came on red and the audible alarm beeped 3 times. I checked the oil, and it was about halfway up the indicator, so I started tha car again, and nothing. When I say nothing, I mean no alarms and no surprises. So I just presume it was a glitch, because all seems fine now. This is the wonder of electronics for you, a slight difference in logic level can be the difference between good or bad!

OK - worst case scenario so far.

Called stealer, reckons synthetic <540 thickness.

Went to car park checked level - didn't even register on dipstick.

Manual reckons VW 502 00 or VW 500 00. Might as well be chinese to me.

I'm up for semi-synth to keep it until Monday. How much will I need?

Left the office, walked into town, Halfrauds closed down, Gasoline Alley closed down. In a moment of genius - PoundLand! They did have some but it was generic "formula 1" ..no more information. I think not.

Looking like a taxi to a petty station for me.

EDIT: There was 1 beep - like a washer fluid warning. and the oil light is yellow\orange.
