The warning light lights up for a few seconds as a functional check when the ignition is switched on.
If the warning lamp is yellow it indicates that the engine oil level is too low.
This warning lamp will also light up if there is a defect in the oil level indicator/sensor.
If lights up or flashes red this indicates insufficient oil pressure.
Should the warning light flash or light up while driving you will also hear three times an acoustic warning as soon as the engine runs at over 1500 r.p.m. You must stop the car and turn the engine off: check
the oil level and top up if necessary.
If the warning lamp flashes even though the oil level is in order, do not continue driving. Do not even run the engine at
idling speed.

no problemo :)

can I just add I personally wouldn't drive it until you know 100% sure its not an oil pressure problem. 1.8t engines have been known to have problems with the oil pickup especially if oil changes have been neglected.
if this is the case and you continue to drive it you could risk starving parts of your engine of oil

second that Brad, i only have a lowly LC but had the pick up problem, called the AA to take the car to the garage when the light came on cos i didnt want to kill it... When my pick ups were blocked the light came on and stayed on

Would a dodgy sensor cause this?

Yes or loose/dirty connection where the plug seats on the sensor. If the sensor is at fault then the light flashes, if it's low oil then it lights steadily.

If it's doing it with JUST THE IGNITION ON i.e. engine not running then first thing to check is oil level.

If that's fine it's the sensor that's playing up.

Low oil pressure lights up red, the faulty sensor flashes yellow, low oil level comes on as permanent yellow.

It's all in the manual btw, pages 2.18 and 2.19 ;)

It sounds like the oil level sensor to me, my mum's LC does this as well, level is fine and it only flashes when you start it.
I'm not sure if the oil level sensor is like the BMW ones where if you have drained the oil and for some reason put the ignition on it burns out the sensor ( apprentices used to do this all the time when I worked at BMW)
