:help::help:Past few days I have noticed oil leaking from under my car today I did an oil change inspected the sump cleaned everything up put new oil in but after getting it warm it still dripped...

I have checked:

- Sump plug
- Sump to engine seal
- Camcover (doesn't seem to be leaking any mass of oil)
- Oil pick up pipe

The leak is coming from fairly high up the engine when on tick over it starts to form a droplet of oil (whilst under the car) towards the drivers wheel at the back of the engine....

Could anyone tell me if there is a common thing which leak around the back of the engine (offisde) ?!

Front cam seal, crank seals, oil return from turbo. Good luck finding it bud.

Can you educate me in locating the 3 sections specified above as i think one of these sections is my issue?

Cam seal is a rubber strip which seal the rocker cover to the cylinder head. Not sure on crank seals but oil return in the pipe that goes from the turbo to the back of the sump, held in by 2 10mm bolts located next to the sump plug.

Hopefully this helps, where is your oil leaking from roughly?

Well thats the intresting point...........if you look up from under the car its more covered on the gearbox side. There seems to be some oil nothing major by the hose next to the turbo but when looking from the top of the engine it seems to have oil on a couple of components just to the right of the engine.

It seems like its had the upper breather hose replaced, so could this be a possible cause if the clips are not tight enough some where along the lines?

Thanks for clearing up the points before joe

The right of the engine as you're looking at it is the same side as the gearbox....I had a little oil on the TIP (turbo intake pipe) when I took mine off that's normal. Although this is the side which has a few gaskets/ bungs on I will get a picture for you so you can see where they go, there's 2 gaskets for the cam chain tensioner and the cam cover seal which I would be looking at. Give me 10 mins I'll get some pics and upload them for you.

That would be great and much appreciated.......took it my mate at the garage yesterday and he was abit confused as to where to start i think it might be a good start with degreasing the lot.

I went to the extent to stripping the engine as it annoyed me that much lol, while I was there I thought I'd do pistons, rods everything, got new gasket all round so hopefully that will cure it, haven't tested it yet so that will be interesting... Pictures uploading now )

Right here's the first one to check, take off cam cover and there will be a seal around the outside (I've lifted it up so you can see:

Then the "half moon" gasket which seals the cam chain tensioner, yours will probably be brown by now this one is brand new:

Finally on that side of the engine there is another chain chain tensioner gasket which is an odd shape and is squashed down underneath the tensioner itself:

(Pointing to it in the pic) from SEAT new they are £5 for the chain tensioner and it's rare you need to replace the cam cover seal unless it has lost its flexibility and gone brittle.

Intresting.........thats for that i will have to have a closer look at the engine bay in abit, do i need to take off the air box hosing to get easy access to look at the seal? I'm still getting used to where everything is after 2 weeks in comp to the megane which i had for 5 years lol

Hoses and more hoses lol

Right i think that seal might be my issue, there seems to be some dirty oil that seems moist around the top section by the hose that runs parallel to the engine......the one thats right of the breather hose ;)

Guessing behind that hose is where the seal is then?

So whats the easy fix and cost? cheers

It's probably easier to remove it bud as it's only 3 10mm bolts.

Ahh OK so if you think you've found it which seal are you referring to the cam cover seal or the 2 cam chain tensioner gaskets?

thinking the cam cover one........but it's probably worth doing both anyways.

Will see about degreasing the area and seeing if it is that.

Whats the usual cost??

thanks again

More than likely be leaking from the half moon gasket for the cam chain tensioner like mentioned above. Mine was leaking there and it took me ages to find it but was very easy to change and was very cheap around a fiver. I ddn't need to replace my cam cover gasket. I did a guide whan I fixed it as there was not one on SCN at the time albiet on my auq Leon.

Yeah the cam chain tensioner gasket is a common failure on all the 1.8t and you lose quite a bit of oil with it. Also that rubbish oem upper breather hose right next to it but it won't leak that much.
