Just worked it out it twists off similar to the oil cap after prising it over its centralising notch leaving an oil cap shape in the rocker cover ---- started car briefly before starting work --4 spark plugs + 1 coil pack renewed easy to spot which one was misfiring one plug looked different to the other 3 plugs -- i.e wet from unburnt fuel
cross fingers the other 3 coilpacks will survive !!!! hope this helps others :)

Sorry I didn't see your posting earlier - yes strange but true the "filler neck" top fitting is the opposite of the "filler neck" bottom fitting. The beauty of having VAG-COM, or even one of these cheaper Gendan scan tools, is that you don't have to work out which coil needs changing the scan tool does that for you! I was very lucky, I felt that there was a trend with these failures and bought one from ebay just in time - it was same date code as I had in the engine, and have only ever changed one coil - but I did buy another spare coil just in case! Most of the VAG coil failures were for another manufacturer, not the usual one that got fitted into the BBY engines. Hum, you just reminded me of the locking slot/peg. Well at least now you have had a chance to find out how to get the plugs out - its a bit tricky unless you unclip some of the cable harness storage frames. Also Haynes suggest making a loop out of something like welding rod to slip over the coil top to let you pull them straight up and off the plugs.

thanks for quick reply st10587 it got me thinking + RUM4MO --- tricky is the right word those coils dont want to come out without putting up a fight !! i used a screwdriver with my fingers crossed that i didnt break harness storage frames to lever them out --- welding rod or something similar may be a safer option -- uncliping them from harness is another fight after removing them from plugs even tho there's a clip on their underside --- your right about unclipping harness frames they aint going any where unless you do that ! My scan tool which i use to reset eml didn't pick up any faults in ecu even tho car was spluttering -- tho it is a cheap one but has found other petty things that that have cropped over past year.

The Gendan scan tool is only £30>£40 and is for VAG cars covering CAN bus cars as well. It covers ENGINE + AUTO TRANS + SRS + ABS. When my wife's Polo with the BBY engine lost a coil she was on holiday from work, I just came back from work to "car running on three cylinders I think" > picked up laptop with VAG-COM and spare new coil > went out to garage and scanned car with VAG-COM found it was coil 3 > removed air cleaner then coil 3 (using two screwdrivers to avoid snapping it - probably leaning against the wiring frame!) > fitted new coil > refitted air cleaner > cleared logged fault > went for run - no problems and 1.5 > 2.5 years later still okay. It can be that easy! BTW in case you don't know this, VAG used NGK plugs on this engine (and lots of other engines), so if you read the NGK code of the VAG plugs, you can buy new ones on-line very cheaply. I think that my first ones came from Halfords as they were doing deals on a pack of 4 plugs, second ones came from ebay - NOS VAG ones. But I have bought elsewhere on line for Passat V6 as no one seems to do deals on packs of 6 !!
