Has anyone one had one pack up?

Mine isnt mixing oil and water but i cant get the oil filter to seal so oil is pissing out. Just rang up the garage as the MOT's up and mentioned my oil loss problem. First thing that shot out of his mouth was the oil cooler. Got a nasty feeling im going to have to sell something for this garage bill.......kidney anyone??

Can you not jst climb under and have a look? I asked a serious question and got no replies lol

What kind of oil cooler is it? I may have one for sale soon, I bought a small 10row one on sunday and already have a rectangular one I think may be too wide for the hoses I have!!

Is the sandwich plate shot? Can you not get a couple more rubber gaskets in there to try and seal it? Surely it can't be too hard to work out where a leak is coming from!!!

Weyhey a reply, cheers mate!

Its the standard oil cooler on an 8v. Oil filter bolts onto it and its fed by the coolant system.

You would think the leak was from a bad seal on the oil filter, thing is im not on my 3rd filter. And it still leaks....now even worse :(

have you scraped all the crud off the engine from the old gasket, with a razor blade perhaps? then applied a smear of oil on the rubber seal before tightening it up?

all i can think of... i didnt even know we had oil coolers... and im doing an automotive engineering degree

Really???? There is an oil cooler in the GTi?!!?

I haven't ever noticed one but then I haven't actually got to doing any engine work apart from changing the leads and plugs. Hell I haven't even done an oil change since I bought it! Thats unlike me!!

you cant get the filter to seal ?

either the cooler is damaged or you have loosened the centre pipe when removing it

as long as they are tight and flat you shouldn't have any problems

WHERE?

take a pic...

it's the heat exchanger plate that the oil filter slots into. mixes 'heat' from the oil & coolant together, so a) warms the water up quicker b) allows some heat transfer to the water & radiator

very crude, but simple (and not that effective)

Yes its an oil cooler, its described as an oil cooler in the haynes. The part is listed as an oil cooler. Sorry for my outburst but......be gone :ban:

Your filter bolts to it bud. Its as m0rk described, not and air cooled cooler but water cooled. There on every 2.0 engine inc. 16v i think.

If it rots inside it can give the impression of a head gasket failure due to the oil and water mixing. Something i thought was wrong with mine sometime ago, found out it was just a blocked breather system in the end. Thats what you get for doing short journeys too much.
