Oil and water. They're just not meant to be together!!!!

Evening all,

Just had a worrying phone call from my local garage who have been doing a 40k service on my car.

It turns out that my coolant bottle is full of water, coolant and OIL!!! Surly this can not be good for the wallet let alone the car.

Hopefully this problem hasn’t been going on for to long.

I had the cambelt and water pump change just 2k ago so new coolant was put in then and the problem wasn’t around and I haven’t noticed a difference in the performance in the car. The only strange thing I noticed was the temp gauge every now on then went down to 0.C but then returned to normal with in a few minutes, which I thought was just a dodgy temp sensor.

The guy at the garage thinks it’s the oil cooler gone. As I understand it the oil cooler also allows the water and coolant to pass next to the oil in the cooler divided by some sort of plate. Which can corrode??????

I could be very wrong as I don’t know to much about this sort of thing. So your thoughts would appreciated.

Also if it is the oil cooler has any one else experienced this problem and more to the point HOW MUCH DID IT COST???/

Cheers

i found this on the site about the head gasket

Head Gasket - Head gaskets can be a cause of overheating, oil consumption or coolant in the oil. I have only heard of one case of a head gasket failure on a 1.8T and it was on a car running 30 lbs of boost and used head bolts. This is a repair better left to an experienced mechanic and is generally a last item to do after all other possibilites have been evaluated. overheating is usually the water pump, and coolant in the oil is usually the oil cooler failing internally.

I haven't seen the car yet, as its still at the garage. But the guys working on it dont seem to think is the head gasket, so i guess there is no white sludge.

If it is the oil cooler i guess the second problem is getting the cooling system clean again.

VW sell 5litre bottles of coolant flush, that flushes the coolant system of oil etc. Not sure on price but if you want a part number and price I can find out at work.

Thanks ganda cupra. If you could provide them details i think it could my things a little easier for me right now.

Cost so far is looking to be around £600 with a 40K service.
