Not sure if its normal for a diesel, but there seems to be a sort of rattling/grunt coming from the engine bay upon acceleration. Is this common? Hard to explain really

Might be the boost pipe knocking on the fuel pump. Or if it has a strut brace fitted, could be the airbox knocking on it with the engine movement.

Check to see if the washer on the engine cover has perished(at the top in the middle)

Mine is broken and the cover pops up every 2 days and makes a creaking sound on acceleration :(

I have a new washer on order(should be here tomorrow) @ £1.22 :)

I had a rattle when accelerating with my TDi 130 - turned out to be the pipes around the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

Bit of pipe lagging and a couple of tie wraps sorted it out.

Took me weeks to find it until Muddyboots pointed me towards the pipes.

LOL - was just about to say how many people had suffered this problem, until I saw my name :)

Look behind the driver's side headlight, and you'll see the fuel filter sat in a black plastic housing. Running past it is a solid plastic pipe (which goes down to the intercooler).
Under acceleration, at certain revs, the pipe rattles against the fuel filter housing.
Just needs a bit of foam (or pipe lagging as Deano suggested) attaching to stop them rattling together :)

I've noticed a slight resonance / rattle from the engine bay at about 1200 - 1400 rpm over the past few days. Came on here to see if it was a common problem and find this thread!

Thanks guys, I will give the pipe lagging treatment a go!

Muddyboots, can you point me in the direction of the fuel filter? Going to have a look at sorting this noise this weekend. Is it a kind of 'can' shaped thing?

Open the bonnet, look for the black canister just behind the driver's side headlight with some hoses going to/from it.

There is a large hard plastic boost pipe running alongside it, which comes from the rear of the engine and disappears down into the bumper. When the engine moves, this pipe can rattle against the fuel filter housing. Push the pipe across and you'll see where it touches - tape some foam either on the pipe or the fuel filter housing and see if it does the trick.

Many thanks! It is the thing then I presumed it was. Engine is slightly different from my old 1.4 8v!
