Hi all. New to the site but been into VAG cars for years now. My current motor is a 1.4 ibiza ( v reg '99' mpi ) and is making me a little concerned. Seems to have developed a squealing type noise thats getting worse. Started doing it only from cold every now and again but did it today when was warm. Doesnt seem to change pitch when you rev harder and seems to be coming from the inlet manifold/throttle body area.
Also broke down on me last week. Ran for a couple of mins, stopped engine at petrol station, but wouldnt restart when i came back to it. Would rev up then cut out. Eventually restarted and didnt miss a beat for several days!
Its a great car but leaves me a little nervous driving her at mo. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks in advance :D

fan belt ? or even power steering belt if it's fitted

both are low down/get wet and squeal and scream when worn along with engine revolutions

Dont think its a belt noise. Doesnt seem to change pitch when i rev it and it sounds more like its coming from the rear of the engine, inlet manifold area.

could be a couple of issues, maybe? ... the squeel deffo sounds like it could be power steering belt etc, cut out , filthy Carb? air leakage (you know what the bloody hoses are like in the Mk2's

I'll have another look at the belts in the morning and try and squirt a bit of lube on them and see if it stops.
Also its got a throttle body and i gave it a good clean out just after it wouldnt start to illiminate that being the cause of non start. In a way i wish it hadnt restarted and i may have had a better chance of finding what caused it :)

Sounds a bit like the noise I had on my 1.4 last week. It was making just such a noise intermittently & the other evening I thought I should try to get to the bottom of it. I eventually decided it must be coming from under the cambelt cover & as it was due for a belt change I decided to take a look under the cover. What I found was the cam belt was looking OK but there were pink deposits round the water pump - leading me to conclude I had a water pump on the way out. Actually, in retrospect , it had needed very occaisional small coolant top ups - another sympton perhaps?

It went into our local garage yesterday & had the water pump & cam belt replaced - so far (early days yet) the noise appears to have gone quiet. I'll give it a few weeks before I can say for sure that's what the problem was. It is however worth taking a peek under your cam belt cover to see if you have any sign of leakage round the water pump.

Hope this helps. Good luck

i know that feeling, the one where it works but never 100% that something is still wrong or about to happen

you get used to it with a mk2 :)

bottle of carb cleaner and a toothbrush hopefully should sort that side of things, it did mine (just watch your fingers , its amazing how sharp it is in there~)!!
check any of the localised pipework for cracks, splits etc too..

 But we love them all the same!

As for the water pump, doesnt seem to be using water and the cambelt was changed less than 10k miles ago but worth a look.

Update, Drove to work today and seemed to be getting worse. Had a look over her and found the weld for the cat convertor heatshield had cracked causing the heatshield to vibrate. Put a big hose clip round it to secure it and seems to have cured the noise for now. I'll give it a bit longer until i'm fully convinced though!
