hi
have read lots on the forums and am going to look (and hopefully buy) a black 2001 v5 tolly tomorrow morning. Never driven one before and am looking forward to it (my present driver is a 2l mondeo auto -yeuch but reliable)
Its done 100,000 and is £1995 but has full seat service history, 2 owners and looks really nice with all the toys - wish me luck !

Good luck. They're very nice in black. I would say there's a bit of negotiation in the price to be honest, but good it's got full history.

My black 2001 Toledo V5 was purchased for £1400, with 120k on the clock. However, that price was based on a last minute Ebay bid, so it was possibly a bit lower than you might expect for a private purchase.

If you're going from a 2 litre auto you are going to s**t yourself the first time you press the gas pedal... :)

Well it is time for you all to nod sagely, or laugh - your choice. I went to see the tolly this morning. First it wasn't black - it was a sort of dark metallic grey. The dealer gave me the paper work, which showed that the "full service hsitory" actually meant service history up to march 2006 when the car had done 106,000. I have no idea what the actual mileage is as the battery was flat as a pancake - the car had stood at the back of their warehouse since October. The dealer then left the premises as "he had something to do" before we could try to start the tolly. He left me alone with about 30 cars, several Porches and mercedes, with keys in the ignition! - Yes, I was tempted., but instead got in my car and left ASAP. What a shambles. The Tolly itself looked tired and unloved, but then valeted to within an inch of its life.
Never mind, I shall continue the search as I am pretty sure I want a V5.

I'm afraid you will find some like that, advertised far beyond reality and a huge disappointment when you see them in person.

Keep looking though, you have to be incredibly patient but they're well worth seeking out. They are just so much car for the money, I don't know of any other car that you could get with the same spec and engine for the same price.

This might be a silly question, have you actually driven one yet?

If your heart is set on one I'm certain you will find a better one for less money. People are finding them hard to sell so that's why they are hanging around dealers. Consider private with the right history. They won't have been hanging around for ages then.

They really are a bargain if you find the right one.

Are they difficult to sell in general or just because of the current climate?

I've been looking to replace my 2003 v5 with 50k on the clock and Parkers are saying £2k trade in or £2ish private sale. That's ridiculous! It's in mint condition as well, or at least as mint as you can get for a 7 year old car.

It's a sad day when I've been looking for a new (well 2 year old used) car at £15k and can't find out that's either better or so different to justify paying £250/mth.

They are really good cars and if you can get one anything like mine then you will be pleased. I'll let you know if I decide to sell mine as I'd rather someone who would appreciate it gets it, than a faceless dealer who will instantly add a grand to the asking price before they even clean it :)

well i'd be happy to buy your car at that price (Really). I don't know why they seem so cheap, given the spec and quality, but then people buy Nissan Micras, so there is no accounting for taste;)

They were an awful lot more than that when I was looking, and Parkers seemed to undervalue them, as they always do with niche market cars. The cheapest late car I saw was a £100k '05 plate at £2800. There were a few 01/02 cars at that kind of price, but with a load more miles.

I'm afraid the resale values on these cars are absolutely criminal, which is excellent for buyers but really bad for sellers. I'm not looking forward to selling mine, partly because I doubt I could ever part with it, but mainly because I'll be selling it for less than my old 1.6 Astra went for.
